I like the 1999 SBA for it's quakiness. Having gone nearly 2 decades between the 1981 and the 1999 just seems funny to me.

I thought dreck was problematic or unattractive coins. Though common (not the error), these look fine to me.

Purchased raw off of eBay from Germany in 2014 for $33. Sent it across the street where it graded PF67UCAM and now resides in my Box of 20 with several 4- and even 5-figure coins:

This 1839-C half eagle does not have its original skin, and it is a bit "too bright." That would make it "dreck" to some people. Our hosts graded it AU-53 which is accurate. Still I doubt that CAC would like it.

So, why did I buy it? I wanted a credible looking, but not terribly expensive example of this Charlotte Mint type coin. I can't spend a 5 figure number on every coin I buy.

I did spot a "dream coin" example of this piece a year or so after I bought this one. There were three problems, however.

It was in an NGC holder which is the "wrong holder" for some people.
It was more than twice the price I had paid for this one.
The dealer had already sold it and was showing to me as a nice example of the of the date and mint mark combination.

Amazing IMO how much nicer HA made your coin look with their "glamour shot." A decent coin regardless, but just goes to show how the "right" lighting can cover marks/flaws.

My photo shows a fair amount of mint surface in the date area and around the rim of the reverse. That is an accurate view of the coin.

But yes, Bright light can drown out a lot of little marks. It can also hide the mint luster that I mentioned although that is less important to some than the marks.

It seems that anytime I want/need to sell one of my coins it turns out to be "dreck" to the potential buyer.

I was wondering what @BillJones reaction was and if he still would have bought it based upon the second pic.

I have been there. Tough coin though.
I'm usually just out a trip to Burger King if mine don't turn out.

The trouble is I almost never like gold coins that are in EF holders. That leaves only the AU and low end Mint State graded coins for me, if the coin is not easy to find. Obviously “widgets” can be purchased in higher grades. Many early to mid 19th century gold coins have been worked upon to some the degree. The question how much can I tolerate?

I can’t tolerate the pieces that look like brass buttons. I can tolerate the coins that are little bright. If you hold them long enough, some of them grow a new skin, even gold. It’s not the “perfect old skin," but it’s often an improvement.

My 1839-C and 1839-D half eagles are about equal. They fill the hole, and I don’t hate them. That’s not a ringing endorsement, but it’s about all you are going to get this market unless you get lucky and can buy a really nice one for $20,000 +. There is not much luck in this market for me, and I don’t feel like spending that much money on these coins, even if the opportunity arises, which it hasn’t. Hence, I have “tough coin dreck.”
