I have never traded for a coin.... Inherent in the principle, I would have to give up something....
I just cannot do that....
Cheers, RickO
Many years ago I traded a 1907 No Periods $10 gold (raw, before slabs, but grade was MS-64), for the 1802 half cent that came from the Garret Collection. The gold coins were hot at that time. It was a three way deal between me and two dealers.
Also "less many years" ago I traded a Liberty $5 gold in an MS-64 PCGS rattle holder (would grade MS-65 today) and some cash for a 1794 half dime in AU-50. Gold was also hot at the time.
I have tried on numerous occasion to "trade", even partial trade for another coin with dealers...it has always (I am not one who uses absolutes freely) not turned out. Apparently the coins that I would to trade for are consignments from another seller who wanted $$$ and not another coin in return. I am trying another BST right now with a dealer...I have not heard back from them yet...they are set up at F.U.N. The day you quit trying, you might as well close up the shop altogether.
BST transactions: dbldie55, jayPem, 78saen, UltraHighRelief, nibanny, liefgold, FallGuy, lkeigwin, mbogoman, Sandman70gt, keets, joeykoins, ianrussell (@GC), EagleEye, ThePennyLady, GRANDAM, Ilikecolor, Gluggo, okiedude, Voyageur, LJenkins11, fastfreddie, ms70, pursuitofliberty, ZoidMeister,Coin Finder, GotTheBug, edwardjulio, Coinnmore, Nickpatton, Namvet69,...
Think the only trading I've ever done was a "Xmas coin exchange" initiated either here, or on another message board. The goal was to give away something you don't want/need, and get something new and exciting in exchange.
I found the whole thing too stressful: On the one hand, you don't want to be "the cheap guy" taking advantage of someone, on the other you don't want to give away the farm either!
In the end, it actually turned out pretty good. Among a few other odds and ends, I gave away a rather attractive raw XF-AU seated quarter, and got a wholesome looking VG-F Bust Half in return. Still have the half, and I think in the end everyone was happy.
AVOID TRADES
The whole process opens up worm cans.
Now PARTIAL trades where you use a coin for a PIECE of the next coin....okay on that.
Trades always have issues. At coin shows I’ve never found anyone who refuses cash. The limitations of the barter system are significant. Back in the day it led to the creation of our little hobby, currency, and a multitude of other financial instruments.
The biggest problem for the collect in a trade with a dealer is that it's usually a wholesale price for your coin against a retail price for the dealer. That's not all bad. Sometimes it's a lot easier to make the trade and be done with coin. Walking a coin around the shows to sell it can be a real drag.
Last spring I traded a PCGS AU-58 1875 20c BF-1 even up for a PCGS AU-53 20c BF-2 with a Florida dealer. I didn't want to tip him off that the BF-2 is really scarce, so I told him it was for a grading set and I had duplicate 58's.
Back in 1990 at a BRNA Convention I traded 4 KrugerRands and a small anount of cash for 4 Liberty $20 including a nice AU50 1874-S Type II.
it's crackers to slip a rozzer the dropsy in snide
That seems lopsided unless your definition of "a small amount of cash" is much larger than mine.
