This is why coin dealers drink. Friends don’t let friends drink alone. And when it comes to politics, religion, and sex.... it’s none of my business. Some guys just need a hug.

Ah yes... politics.... always interesting, often polarizing. Much like religion, without the oft accompanying murderous fervor. This was another great reason for the Open Forum.... downright bloody verbal exchanges... it was so much fun.... >:) I do think the social media has been the death of civilized discourse though. People type things they would never say when face to face. This leads to animosity and verbal violence. When I was in the Navy we had many long nights at sea and the movies were not always great (especially the third time around). On my ship, we formed a discussion group that included about 12 regular members and no topic was off limits. The only standing rule was, if you became upset, you were expected to walk away. Those that violated the rule were not allowed back. I learned a great deal through those sessions. Too bad social media has not developed like that. Intelligent discourse with varied inputs is both informative and enjoyable. Cheers, RickO

After 8 years of one side being in control now it goes the other way. This has been our history for centuries. If you lose a friendship over such issues, it was a thinly veiled one at best. If I care about you, I don't care if we agree political. It is a Sad story but will never be mine.

In that case, you are truly better off. If you have differences in politics, there are sure to be other differences also. And then what would happen. ...

Actually a coolheaded sane post by the OP, unlike a few too many others in some other threads on this forum. It really isn't worth losing friends over (that's what the Unfollow button is for!), but if one is lost maybe you just weren't meant to be friends. We should be able to accept our differences - up to a point. If one of your friends suddenly stands tall and announces "killing all puppies and kittens will cure us from all the world's ills", well folks, there really isn't two sides to that one unless it was the year 10,000 B.C. It might be worth slinking away from that person.

As for those that bemoan the loss of "traditional values", sorry that's just progress, especially when enough people wake up and realize something is just not right anymore. Mistakes and faulty attempts to right things are made along the way, that's all perfectly normal. Think of this, would we still want the old "traditional" rattler holder to be the PCGS standard today? Hell, we still have people who can't stand slabs and grading standards!

Life's far too short to bitch and moan about things far beyond your personal control, there are beaches, bars and other fun places that need to be explored and enjoyed!

I worked almost 30 years for a large 31K plus employee company.

Approximately 9 years ago, our HR manager secured tickets to the inauguration of President Obama. Since my office was next to hers, I just asked how the trip was? She was very excited about it, and then asked me if I had voted for the President. I said no, and she said that it was a significant error in judgement on my part.

Not the words you want to hear from the HR manager. I was not the only one she asked about their voting pattern and it made a lot of people very uncomfortable, what what are you going to do? Go to HR?

That is deeply disturbing. Unless you were good friends, that sort of exchange should have disqualified her for an HR role, and many others as well.

There is a disturbing trend that has been following the dumbing-down of America over the past 40 years:

""You MUST agree with me so that I feel validated and don't ask me to support my position with logic or facts.""

Nearly all intelligent debate now deteriorates into name-calling and demonizing.
Cable news lets you pick your side and is a drum-beat for the things you already believe.
Democracy is headed for trouble if this continues.

The dumbing down trend is being done deliberately because it is profitable for those who do it. Look at who is behind this process. They are catering to people who are giving them quite a bit of money by telling them what they want to hear. These people are all about themselves, laughing all the way to the bank at the people whom they have duped and have given them their money. They make Charles Ponzi look like he set up a lemonade stand.

The truth, in any situation is many times in the middle, but currently as has been mentioned we are now able to align with a 'truth' that validates an opinion or approach that we have and when aligning with this 'truth' find many others have done the same, thereby further validating the belief. Combine that with the observation that polite debate / discussion has gone out the window for many and the potential for ruined relationships exist.

Your friends have common ground in coins and hopefully will be able to leverage that. In the end, friends and family is all you have and hopefully they will realize that before it is too late.

So, Al; any indication which direction you lean?

JMHO, I am a Democrat and have voted so all my life, although I will vote Republican if the candidate or issue is reasonable. what bothers me for the last 30+ years is the need to focus on social issues while religion keeps getting pulled into the fray. what is wrong with the Nation today: we are polarized Right and Left with no Moderates to speak of from either party. we have a third party, the Tea Party, which holds Republicans hostage and Independents tend to hold Democrats hostage. the end result is "Pork Barrel" politics, even though they seldom call it that, and the public loses every time.

You should come into McGonigals some time and see how divided that place can be when it comes to politics
