Who has experience with this firm?
I see their website but was curious about archives / other pieces not pictured that were bought from them or sold to them.
Please respond or PM me.

That is a great token, but what is that lizard thing and what is he doing?

Though often confused with a salamander, it is actually a depiction of Merriam's embossing press. The "pancake" on the "lizard's" head was to push down on the press.

One of the most interesting tokens I've seen, and it always gets people's imagination running wild.

Fascinating, but what was that toad press used for, being as small as it was? Was it just a novelty?

That is a very rare token. 10-20 know. Looks like you have one of the finest I’ve ever seen!

I never knew that Merrian sold a toad press. I knew that he sold pieces with various animals on them, but I had heard that the toad never came to be. I have one with a lion featured on it.

What do you use it for? Was it intended as a fancy paperweight?

    Great item BTW.

No, it was not a paperweight, although it could be a great one. It was used to emboss an image or lettering on a piece of paper the way a modern notary republic seal works. Instead of squeezing it between you fingers, you set it on a surface and push down.

I have never tried to use this in the fear that I could break the 150 + year old spring that is in it.

Sorry, I can't get the picture to post in the perpendicular orientation. I don’t know why. If someone can down load it and fix it, be my guest.

That toad press is interesting - as is the token. As to the OP, I have not done business with them, however, over the years, there have been several positive posts here regarding transactions with them. Cheers, RickO

Haven't yet purchased anything from them but I'm on their e-mailing list. Offerings that I've seen appear top notch with good photography and descriptions. Just hasn't been much new offered lately.
