Do you think the reverse will carry this A&R quarter?

I'll apologize in advance for the crappy quick pics. I'd take more but she is already packaged up to go to our hosts.
So do you think the reverse will help bring this to a 63? Luster on this quarter is off the charts. Hopefully you can see that in the pics.

    What's going on in the obverse field? Is it damage? Looks fairly nice from here but I wonder the reason why it hasn't been graded already.

    The coin came from a local auction. There was probably 50 coins or so and they were all ungraded.
    There is something in the viewers right field that concerns me a little. It dosent look like damage more like a strike through of some sort. Wish I had better pics but a TV is coming

    I can't really tell from the pic. If that's luster then it's off the charts. I'll take your word for it because the pic makes it look buffed. The obverse just looks like it has some bag marks from what I can see.

    my experience tells me the reverse has a hard time improving the grade (compared to obverse), but can lower the grade if bad - your reverse looks better than obverse, but just like many Washington quarters, so I doubt it will bump total grade much

    I agree with davewesen. The reverse can only hurt the grade, very seldom does it ever help the overall grade.

    Ditto. The reverse will not increase the grade of this coin. It can only support it.

    The piece has been dipped or cleaned, which is not a look that is in favor right now. There also appears to be some cloudiness in the obverse fields, which is not a good thing. It could be from an improper dip or from PVC damage.

    The coin might or might not grade. I can’t tell from those photos, but if it does grade, it will fall somewhere between an AU details grade to maybe MS-61 if you are lucky.

    I don't have a really nice 1853 Arrows and Rays Quarter in my type set. The piece I have is an NGC MS-61, and here are the photos of it. I don't think that this piece would cross to PCGS in the same grade.

    Hard to tell from these pics, as you are aware.
    I guess it depends on how much the strike through bothers the graders, and how much the luster is impaired from previous dips, but from what I can tell a 62 with a shot at 63 isn't unreasonable.
    This is one of those conditionally-scarce coins.....quite common in F-XF, much tougher in AU/MS. I settled on a raw XF45 (my grade) after searching for a nice AU for quite awhile.

    The obverse fields may have been smoothed to eliminate dings or light scratches. There is a reason why it is still raw this late in the game.

    I don't think that the OP coin will straight grade due to the viewers right field.

    Appears to have nice luster.... surprised it is raw, but that happens if held in a family collection.....Let us know what the verdict is.... I think it will straight grade.... Cheers, RickO

    If the coin has good cartwheel you should get a nice ms grade, but hard to tell from pics.. Sometimes the raw coin auctions are to the advantage of the house, especially when buyers with deep pockets and optimistic gullible grading abilities are present, free food and liquor doesn't hurt either..lol like this one: http://www.charteroakcoinauctions222.wizaweb.com/page/page/960288.htm

    Sometimes the reverse on Bust coins, etc. affirm an XF or AU grade if they are particularly strong in details.

    No, for the most part you can ignore the reverse when it comes to grading this coin -- it will only hurt, not help, the coin.
