1865-S $2.50 gold new auction record

I don't know this coin but the auction result sure is strong. The old auction record for a 64 on coinfacts was $20k, this 63 CAC went for $36k! Shows a real tough date that is fresh and seldom in auction still bring super strong money.
Here is the auction:

Stupid money. I hate it. Love the records and the coins, though.
Only 1 finer.

cool
It just takes 2 players.
I can’t say that the photos made it look like a drop dead screaming original coin but who knows in hand.

I bet Ian is thrilled with the publicly GC is getting from these prices realized on these gold coins as of late. Certainly good for business.
Nice coin!
1 of 1 or 1 of 2, pretty much name your price.
Great result for GC and consignor. It is also good for us collectors. I hope they continue to attract nice coins. It's a very good venue.
The price for the coin seems high but it is top pop.
Very nice result and great coin. That date is very tough to find nice and especially with a decent strike... DW calls it an extremely underrated date with around 90-100 known, most XF or lower. Of course, it's also got the multiple levels of demand thing going as a civil war date.
Wow... nice coin but a monster price..... makes me wish I had acquired some 'back in the day'....
Don't we all have those wishes.....
Cheers, RickO
That's a nice one for sure Todd. Strong price. You didn't happen to pick up the 66PL 93o Morgan in the Legend sale did ya?
I watched that coin closely. It wasnt just two bidders. Multiple bidders put in bids over 20k. I think the strike looks unusually good for the date and i was told it was original which one never finds for this date. I thought it would go for $25,000. Congrats to the new owner
