Silly Rabbit, Buy the Plastic is More Important than the Coin: PCGS SP70 Set of 10

Apparently, coins are meaningless, it is all about the plastic. Same Coins, Same grade, Same grading service, 2X difference in price.

These are 2 2017 EU sets of 10, SP70, both PCGS

Both closed about the same time on ebay.

Garden variety 1st strike $127,50

Garden 1st strike Denver ANA with Cleveland Signature 255.01

There is actually a pretty tight grouping of prices basic on WHICH holder it is in, based on about 400 sales on sets of 10, PCGS, SP70 sales on ebay.

So it appears, it is NOT the coin, but the plastic.

Flak vest on, hatches locked.

That's not news...it's been like that for years. Pop. report comes also into play. Different coin #'s for the same grade & coin.

There are a group of "dealers" that supply coins for the modern registry "game" and for those customers that like labels that they are willing to pay a premium for. So be it - the dealers are in for the quick profit to supply a piece of plastic with a 70 on it.

I learned my lesson years ago by dealing with a well-known dealer on this forum. I paid STUPID money for a few 70dcam state quarters because I lived in those specific states. And I bought them early before the true pops of 70s vs 69s would be known - a recipe to overpay. BAD move - I consider to be part of my numismatic education.

All one has to do is look for what these "dealers" are willing to part with their "non-70" inventory. They score with the '70s and the rest are dumped on the market. Prices are below grading costs - even less than $5 a coin.

Flak vest also on, hatched locked. Fully locked and loaded.

Yep....many - if not most - collectors today, seek the plastic and the sticker...The coin has become a minor part of the 'game' played in numismatics today. If it were still the hobby of yesteryear (or, as I still collect), it would be all about the coin and also any relevant history. Cheers, RickO

there is little else to differentiate modern coins to create scarcity.
