2017 gold prospecting trip

Time for my annual mosquito feeding expedition to Northern Finland, which took place back in July

First a few glimpses of rare, fair weather

It was raining quite a bit, and was chilly at times too.
The coldest day was 37 F, and it was snowing not far from where I was. In July....

This is a more accurate representation of the weather

The rain meant that there was plenty of water. Very nice.
Lack of water has been an isssue for me at times in the past

As if there weren't enough mosquitoes already, plenty more on the way in every puddle..

Some more local "wildlife". Blue color seems to attract insects, or perhaps I'm just imagining things

Some fine gold in the pan

The grand total was 3.04 grams, including one decent nugget of 0.56 grams.
It's almost round, and as a result it rolled all the way to the riffles at the very end of the sluice.
It was a big surprise to find anything decent in those. Anything sizeable tends to get caught much earlier than that.

A closer look at the best nugget

Ha! I believe it's called a Ribbed Pine Borer.
It's perfectly happy munching on trees and is nothing to worry about.
Maybe it can bite if you mess with it. It has some jaws...
So, not dangerous, but definitely looks like a boss:

Remind me never to go to Finland! Those chompers would be sure to find my flesh! I get bit by mosquitos while standing chest deep in a river! That's the truth and they swam underwater and bit me through my denim jeans on the legs!
These things would strip me of my flesh in minutes!
    Nice gold though.

Looks like a fun trip as long as you don’t get eaten by the wildlife! The god thing about gold is it comes out shiny and isn’t mangled to death like some silver coins at the beach.

    Nice.
That insect reminds of the toy from the 'Cootie' game.
