1913 type one, matte proof, PCGS PR-62 arrived today -- looks like a higher grade for sure!!

BUFFNIXXBUFFNIXX Posts: 2,727 ✭✭✭✭✭

Here is a really nice 1913 type one matte proof PR-62 buff I picked up today. Impossible to tell why this only got a 62, no nicks, no spots. no problems and nice even glowing appearance. I think these are good values at the current price levels, provided you get a nice piece like this without major problems. Putting a nice matte proof set of buffs in, say PR62 to PR64 can be quite a challenge when you try to find nice problem free coins.

Maybe it is a little brighter than it should be. Quite often Matte Proof and "glowing" do not go together.

Matte Proof nickels tend to have duller surfaces than a bright Mint State piece.

Well said. I was about to say the same thing. It's a beautiful piece in every way but certainly something held it to a 62. Looks freshly graded too.
    Very nice piece :)

I do not know much about proof buffalo's but I do like the looks of your coin!

That is about as nice a Buff as I have ever seen regardless of grade.

I don't see anything major that would give it a 62. The coin is as "rough hewn" as a 13Ty1 should be. I'm adding this comment because I just don't know..........maybe it is a little too dark?

I don't see it. Go figure.

When you submit a coin to get the “PCGS seal if aproval” on the right does not the coin go thru some kind of a test to determine whether or not it had been cleaned in the past? Maybe that is what happened? But that said I keep looking at this coin for some flaw that would put it into the 62 bucks and I cannot find any. I would call it a 64.

you have it in hand already? I was shown this coin recently and it says the listing ended yesterday. The sellers photos you posted aren't saying much either way.

The coin was delivered to me by first class mail yesterday around 4 pm. It was mailed from Pittsburgh about 24 hours earlier. I was surprised it got to me so fast, actually Pittsburgh Pa and Akron Ohio are only about 110 miles apart so the delivery was not impossible. I do have it now.

That is a very nice Buff.... I will join with most here and say 'Why only 62?'.....The slab pictures 'appear' to show some wear on the head.... however, not the TV..... Cheers, RickO

Nope! no wear on the head, no hairlines or anything. Really a puzzling grade to say the least, rico.

here we go again. by looking at "a picture" please tell me how you made that determination when at least three professional graders who actually had the coin in their hands didn't think so.

That is a curious grade -- the coin looks better!

I wonder what we're missing in the smallish photos, as I suspect the graders were on to something we haven't yet figured out.

Overdipped or hairlines would be my first guesses as to why.

How does its luster compare to others matte proof buffs in hand? Are there any hairlines not visible in the photo?

I think I know why this coin grades only 62!! Another collector who posts here sent me a private message and informed me that the problem is that coins sent to get the lil SECURE stickie get much more scrutiny than do coins going in thru the regular process. In fact this collector who collects variety quarters first sends his coins in thru economy submission to get the grade and then, if he is satisfied with the grade it goes back in to get the variety!! Makes sense to me and I will be doing this in the future. I was really mad about this coin but have calmed down a bit and will continue to use pcgs but also ngc anacs and segs.

Matte proofs are tricky to grade. Being the they are basically sand blasted they get friction/ glossy spots and the dusty frost is quick to go. Your coin looks like it has been rubbed down some.

The 62 appears to be a luster/surfaces grade and not a contact mark grade. There is more than one way to net a cat. :#

I strongly disagree with your friend and the secure holder revelations. Doesn't make any sense. So, your saying, if they look at coin harder or more closely, the grade goes down?

i like the coin's strike and overall eye appeal. no comment on the grade, as i cannot grade it accurately.

  • clarkbar04clarkbar04 Posts: 4,982 ✭✭✭✭✭

The graders don't know it is going to be in a "secure" holder when they are looking at it.

I think it is a very attractive coin. My favorite coin in my collection is a matte proof-62.
