Now this one is interesting to me. The description, specifically, and the fact that it is from such a reputable auction house. As always, I’m taking this with that proverbial grain of salt. Still, I love the item’s description and the item itself is rather lovely, as well. (I am in no way affiliated with the writing of the description or the item listed - this is just tangent information to the set.)
Here is the item referenced above and a photo in the slab (for posterity):
Original Mickey Mantle photo, taken by noted photographer Don Wingfield, used in the production of Mantle's 1951 Wheaties Card. Inscribed "Mickey Mantle No. 7" by Mantle in blue Sharpie (grading "10") along the top. Encapsulated and certified as an original Type 1 Don Wingfield photograph by PSA/DNA. This photo, taken at a 1951 preseason exhibition game at Ebbets Field, is an extremely early Mantle image, dating prior to his official Major League debut on April 15th. This very image was later used in the production of Mantle's 1951 Wheaties card. The 1951 Wheaties set, which consisted of eight cards, was a "test" issue and offered only in very limited quantities within a small market area. The set was never issued nationally because both Mantle and Al Rosen, who was also featured in the set, were unable to come to financial terms with General Mills (the maker of Wheaties) over the use of their likenesses. As a result, Mantle's Wheaties card, which can also lay claim to being his true rookie card, is rare today. This is just the second original example of this photo we have ever seen. The fact that it has been signed by Mantle only adds to its desirability and significance. The photo (8 x 10 inches) displays light staining along the base, small areas of surface paper loss along parts of the border, tiny edge tears, and light creasing. A paper label bearing Mantle's name printed in typed letters appears on the reverse. In Good condition overall. Individual Full LOA from PSA/DNA.

For what it is worth, I have reached out to REA to see what the basis for that description was and it apparently came from a letter that accompanied the photo. I’m trying to be respectful with my requests because I am not actively bidding on that lot and because I imagine the folks at REA are under duress presently with the auction going on.
Hopefully, I’ll have more information to report soon.

Working it now; sent out a tweet to some collector/follower friends, some card shops too, hoping someone responds. My plan was, if someone did actually have one for sale, I’d either buy it and send it to you, or get you both in touch with each other to work something out. As soon as I know something I’ll let you know! 😊

You are MOST welcome! I’ve put out feelers on Twitter to fellow collectors, and in some Facebook groups, and I’ll keep asking around; I want to see you complete your set!!
A partial set closed today on eBay with some pretty strong prices. I mention this mainly because the gentleman who sold them has a brick and mortar card shop in Minnesota for over 30 years. Two weeks ago, these were listed on eBay and I immediately peppered Calvin, owner of The Ball Park, with questions. I asked if I could share what he knew and he graciously agreed...
Needless to say, this is a fairly exciting development since as mentioned previously in the thread, General Mills HQ (then and now) is right there in the same state as the card shop.
Another fun twist...
Curious about the rare, mysterious and beautiful 1951 Wheaties Premium Photos?
While last weeks thread was anti climactic, it almost had to be. I spoke no lies then just as I will speak none now. I was not the winning bidder last week, fellow collectors, but there is more than one way to hunt. I racked my brain wondering why a card seemingly of interest to me alone would be soaring. I caught a bad vibe - despite the seller seemingly like a really good guy on the phone and over messages - and got cold feet. But I couldn’t stop clicking back and trying to figure it out; why, dammit, why! Then a memory hit me like a wife that has caught her drunk husband eating a turkey leg before it’s served at a family Thanksgiving dinner; I remembered that I had issued a card bounty to a few folks whom I thought I could trust. After sifting through who seemed most likely to help in my scattered and gray mattered brain, I reached out to that friend, whom I’d made exclusively through collecting. We’ve actually never met face to face. Sure enough, he told me he’d seen it and was on it. So, I figured that with him (and his bidding style) I was in good hands and told him to ‘win the card’ at all costs with the caveat that we may need to trade depending on where it goes, price wise. As such, it went well, I squared quickly and today, on the third day of September two thousand and nineteen, a great and mighty quest has ended and a mighty whale has seen its end after a long glorious battle. In the end, it did not take me with it and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
So without further ado, it is my great pleasure to present to you for your viewing pleasure a rare and unique card and it’s place within a rare and beautiful, complete set.

In addition, here are the three really fun ‘set’ photos. The last one is to tide me over until I can get Mr. Kramer in a PSA slab. (Still, I thought it pretty good trickery on my part.)
Lastly, I know many were following along in this journey; I appreciate it tremendously - the offered assistance, the shared similar stories and the general excellence of the posters and mods here on the Collectors Universe forums. Your messages publicly and privately have made this voyage even more memorable.
While the quest for set completion now comes to an end, the quest for information will continue in perpetuity until such time as I am satisfied that I have learned all there is to know about this enigmatic masterpiece of a set.
Thank you all and God bless.

I view these things differently than most. I think eBay sets a default threshold for Buy it Now or Best Offer listings at 50%. Meaning the lowest offer sent that wouldn’t be auto-rejected would be 3700ish. This is all 9 baseball players - probably the most desirable grouping - and the Mantle is a PSA 6. The last Mantle PSA six that I saw listed sold very quickly and was listed for a shade under 3k (above). I happen to know the seller and it was a legitimate sale. The value of the others has a lot to do with how and where they are sold. As I’ve said before, I don’t know too many people who collect the set itself but they’re part of PSA player master sets so they have some ‘draw’ in that sense.
Oddly enough, it looks there is someone new in pursuit of the set.
