Walker Proof Digital Album Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
Just imaged this today, need to cross it. This is an 1851-O quarter eagle. It comes in 2 varieties, 1 has the digits of the date doubled, but as that die aged, the 185 doubling disappears and only the doubling of the 2nd 1 is present in later die states. The other is a separate die with no digit doubling. The dies can also be distinguished by the placement of the date showing they are clearly different dies and the non-doubled is not just a late die state of the doubled die.
Using the Heritage archive for determining the relative abundance of the dies, the non-doubled die represents 5% of the extant examples. Mine is that variety below. Winter says there are up to 250 extant, about 600 have been certified by NGC and PCGS with certainly many resubmissions. Taking the 250 from Winter, that would be 12.5 of the rare variety, if say 500 are extant, then 25 non-doubled die variety are extant. Yet, no premium for rare die varieties of Liberty quarter eagles, alas.
