Was an active collector buying 1978-82, 1995-1999, and was buying. And selling frequently on eBay 1999-2006, building a US type set and several series. Have slowed down since, very rarely selling and only occasionally buying, a coin or 3 a year.
Hobby for the last 60 years with a semi-dry spell from the mid 90s till 2011. Then I jumped back in with both feet. Also a investor/hoarder of sorts, buying, then selling, then buying etc. Vest pocket dealer early on, then eBay on occasion starting around November of 1997.
it's crackers to slip a rozzer the dropsy in snide
Accumulator, mainly silver, I blame it on my grandfather. He bought everything and would show it to me when i visited on weekends.
He had a ton of stuff. (Nothing earth shatering but had quantity- Morgans, Piece, SLQ, small gold etc...) We would go up to the attic and open up one of his gun safes, he would be like "Ok Bruce what one do you want to open today?" And we would spend the next hour going thru the albums 2x2, flips and boxes. Good times.
I've sold some coins. But a dealer I'm not.
I can't seem to focus on any series. I pick up what catches my eye at the moment. But have been eyin some earlier gold lately, and may start a short set soon.
I guess I'm kind of in a unique situation. I was strictly a hobbyist from childhood through 30 years of climbing the corporate ladder in the IT field. Since retiring from that area, I've spent the last 10 years working as a cataloger for one of the major auction houses. It has enabled me to plow all of my earnings from cataloging right back into the hobby. So, I guess that now puts me in both categories - hobby and profession.
Collector since 1988. A long lull ended in 2013, but I had a collection the entire time and added a few pieces in 2000 and when my grandfather died I inherited his hoard. I only sell to churn and buy more/different coins as taste changes.
GSAs, OBW rolls, Seated, Walkers. Anything old and Colorado-focused, CO nationals.
I would be a dealer if I didn't have to put up with collectors.

New collector here (still trying to learn all the abbreviations thrown around here...)But I bet it would make an interesting profession.

collector and just as happy with that
Hobby. Selling on e-Bay and at shows is just a way to make some money to buy more coins.
