How did this slip past the finalizer?

As I was browsing around eBay for varieties, I came across this straight-graded double dime. Somebody got very lucky with this submission. That's the most goo I have seen on a straight-graded coin. Then again, maybe I need to get out a bit more.

The yellowish stuff an the obverse looks like left over Scotch Tape glue or just plain glue. I too am surprised that it got a straight grade.
Looks more like it was pushed rather than slipped.....:)
Perhaps the finalizer was distracted with hurricane news or nutso over in N. Korea.

I do believe an acetone bath would significantly help that coin... either glue or tape residue there....Cheers, RickO
yes some one got lucky with that one getting by. just saying
You never know what the spots will like under the residue after you remove it.
This. The glue from the tape may have protected the surface in those areas from toning, or eaten into the metal.
According to TDN you can't judge from an image.
@BillJones said: "You never know what the spots will like under the residue after you remove it."
Actually, this is not entirely true as it depends on several things. All I will say is that very often with the proper light and tools an experienced professional can tell in order to make a decision to conserve it or not. Many types of residue are transparent (as this). When a coin is already toned (as this is) removing the tape will not leave as big a contrast on the coin.
In many cases, I'll bet a little contrast can be eliminated. Of course, that would not be conservation, would it?
What.........no CAC?????
I could never feel good to have that in my collection as a straight graded coin.
That's coin I wouldn't even consider submitting, unless I needed it to be in a genny holder.
While this true........I personally don't like this coin at all. See that's the beauty of it.......none of us have to buy this coin if we don't want to.
Which dealer would be best to describe this coins positive attributes and what would they say?
Let's hear them boys and girls!

Forget the finalizer, how did it get past the SUBMITTER? LOL. Tape residue takes like 2 minutes to safely remove.
That's actually a rare coin: 1 in a million that the submitter ignores the tape residue. 1 in a million that the grader misses it. 1 in a million that the finalizer misses it. Total odds? 1 in a QUINTILLION!!!
Really!
A bath would probably hurt it actually. Seems like its been on there a while so the metal underneath would have aged at a differnt rate.
If it had a sticker, you'd have to.
@CascadeChris....I agree, however, it is so ugly in that condition, I would try....I don't like ugly coins. Cheers, RickO
If it had a sticker......I would still not like the coin and would never buy that coin..........unless......
it was a super tuff variety that I needed and have been looking for for years and had never seen one in any grade.
Looking at the residue that's on Liberty's lower hair, left (viewer's right) shoulder, and nearby drapery, the wear and color beneath the adhesive seems to match that of the neighboring detail. Likewise for her foot. Of course, this stands to reason, since these were long out of circulation when Scotch tape was invented in 1930. The adhesive in the fields appears darker than that on the lighter part of the coin, so the color of the coin was unlikely to have changed (much) since it got taped. I'd start with the stuff on the rim to make sure all went well with removing it, but my money's on acetone improving this beast.
