I'm guessing this is merely an exercise, as the 8 pm track shows the eyewall staying along the east coast, pretty much as it's shown most of the day. If it does shift inland from its current track, it would like hit Tampa as a Cat 3, after traveling over substantial landmass.
Either way, I think you are safe to book your Winter FUN plans.
Just got back from a little over a week working disaster relief at the Brown Convention Center in Houston.
Couple things that COULD make life easier:
Important documents, like a current prescription list, Driver's License Number, proof of identity and address:
Take pictures, and then email them to yourself. Some people had copies on their phone, but they were soaked and they lost them, whereas FEMA, Red Cross, etc. have lap tops and you can access your email and print off copies.
Veterans: Same thing with the DD214. Also, having a hat or shirt with military logo (Vietnam Vet), 1st Cav patch on a hat, etc. gets a little more attention.
Cash: Carry some, more than normal, small bills. ATM machines fail, computer systems fail, IPHONES do not work, etc. but cash still works.
If you can get out now, get out. Much better than being brought out in a canoe with only the soaking wet clothes on you body.
Correct that the averaged computer model track is up the east coast. But it is still 4 days out from Fl and all of the state is within the cone of uncertainty. Here is hoping that the projected track continues to shift further east.
Praying for the safety of everyone in Irma's path. After a frenzied search & many false starts, we managed to get our Mom on a early Fri eve flight out of S. FLA, just a few hours before the winds are predicted to hit speeds that would stop all flights. Keeping our fingers crossed. Such a helpless feeling.

I spoke with NGC yesterday; they said water was sold out in the stores. I'm sure they will be down for the duration.
Oh C**p!! I forgot NGC is there. My 11 rare Conders are sitting there waiting to be graded. They are already past the defined grading time. I hope they survive the ordeal. Looks like I should have sent them to PCGS........

Oceanographers have discovered the wreck of the Tampa Florida Convention Center buried in the Sea of Mexico floor during the Great Storm of 2018 - 400 years ago. A badly corroded metal sign seems to read "Co S ou" but linguists have not been able to decipher its meaning. Some believe this was the site of a company that made thermoplastic parts. Among the ancient relics found were curved plastic and glass discs called "magnifiers" by their primitive users and often found amid scientific institution structures. Numerous lime-encased pieces of flesh about 20mm by 200mm were found often associated with the remains of unfortunate humans and a strange yellow substance - much of this reminds us of remains from the Roman resort town of Pompeii. The most common artifacts at the Tampa site were thermoplastic cases approximately 5mm by 60mm by 125mm each of which contained a metal disc once used for money. Analysis shows that in addition to well preserved gold and silver discs, there were items in copper, tin and other metals.
Four centuries ago, at the time of the Great Storm, the peninsula of Florida extended southward to within 175km of the island of Cuba. Now Florida is a narrow nub of land extending 200km into the Sea of Mexico and the Atlantic ocean.
Examples of many artifacts from the Tampa site will be sent to Mars-iV and Callisto Seas colonies for enjoyment by the residents.
Possibly the only benefit would be the likelyhood that treasure from treasure ships is chirned up and washed to beaches. Other than that it's going to be a sad day for Fl, Ga, Sc
Latest computer models put the center of the path through the center of Florida - hence the mean of these models now shifts the hurricane further west. That puts Tampa and Sarasota (NGC) more into play. However, the revised models give it ONLY a Cat 4 status at the time it would hit central Florida..........
Friends tells me their relatives are going to hunker down in this all up the E Florida coast. Let's hope for the best..........
This mornings tracks puts Irma just a tweek farther west through FL. Puts Tampa more into play. But now expected to be ONLY a Cat 2 when it hits Tampa-Orlando area. So maybe damage will be much less. But anyone going to FUN this year will want to pay attention to damage in Tampa before booking, as Larry notes.
I've not seen it as a Cat 4 forecasted for central FL, only a 3.....and it's currently forecasted to be down to a 2. The rate of travel looks to be slowing, however, so that's not good. More time to dump rain!
Tampa is not going to take a direct hit by a cat 5 from this storm. Hurricanes weaken a lot as they travel over land and Irma would have to travel a few 100 miles over land to hit Tampa. Unless Irma travels on a trajectory no one is even considering out fully into the gulf and then turns around and hits Tampa which seems very unlikely.
As noted in my post, it is expected to be a Cat 2 when it hits Tampa. The newest forecasts at 11 am now put the eye right through Tampa. Cat 2 winds for a direct hit are still very bad. I have been in one of those and I can say that there will be damage. The big issue for the Convention Center which is right next to the Bay, is storm surge in combination with the high winds. NGC is around 8 miles in land, storm surge likely to not be an issue, just the wind. We will see.
Looks like the Convention Center is right in the path. I'm thinking the storm surge is going to be giant. If I remember right, the center is on higher ground than the local hotels. It's going to be a mess.
I wish all the folks in Florida the best.
It looks like a Cat 3 hit in the middle of Tampa. What a mess!

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
I agree Larry, it is now looking worst case scenario for NGC at Sarasota and for the Tampa Bay area. The eye looks like it will go just offshore which will increase storm surge, and the winds will be 3-4. CNN has Anderson Cooper on the ground really close to the Convention Center right now and it does not look good from what he is saying. Stay safe Floridians.

They always do. And with a storm of this size I'd say its a safe bet detectorists will be out in droves shortly after it passes.

Must admit I hadn't thought about it. If the storm proves to be that catastrophic, a coin show will be the least of their worries.
Best wishes to my friends in the S.E.
Please stay safe.

What happened with FUN when Andrew struck Florida in 1992?
300 years from now they will still be finding slabs in the sand.

That hurricane went across Homestead/Miami area and into the Gulf of Mexico. Different path expected for this one.

I know, but hurricanes are hundreds of miles wide.
Remember that the FUN is months away.
Most needed repairs will be completed by then if needed.

It took years to recover from Andrew....not 1 or 2 but in some places decades....
Don't quote me on that.
I hear they have a new flag for Cat 5 hurricanes:
Stay safe, everyone!

I was in the Caribbean when we were hit with a category 5 hurricane. It is no joke.

Roger, did you ever read "Motel of the Mysteries?"
@mustangmanbob...Thank you for your advice and thank you for helping our fellow Americans....Cheers, RickO
Well, I've stayed at some motels that were mysteries, but have not heard of the book.

Let's pretend this is all over.......
I'm giving speech in Orlando on the 25th...maybe.
I think I'll wait a while to book my room in Tampa for the Fun show. Hope this thing dies.

Many residents in So.FL fled to Tampa to escape the storm. I hear all hotels were booked out by Friday. Boy, this is not good!
They always do. And with a storm of this size I'd say its a safe bet detectorists will be out in droves shortly after it passes.
