My collection of liberty quarter eagles is being sold by Doug Winter on his site I believe starting tomorrow. I sold them outright to Doug so I no longer have a financial interest in the coins. Each coin I truly felt was special and I'm hoping that the new owners get as much enjoyment from them as I did. The collection was truly world class---just not complete. I am taking a very small break and then will start my most ambitious numismatic project to date.

I am a fellow Kentuckian who loves quarter eagles! I'm sure my collection is no where near what you had, though.

Best of luck in your new direction. That has to have taken quite a lot of time and effort to put together that collection of Quarter Eagles...must have been difficult to part with. Are you willing to share what your "most ambitious numismatic project to date." is that you'll be starting?

Wow... a major change in direction.... and selling your quarter eagle collection gives a ring of finality to the previous phase. Perhaps you should not announce your new focus.... prices tend to rise as interest is noted. Cheers, RickO
Thanks for everyone's comments. The set that I sold to Doug and that he will be selling was very rewarding and I enjoyed it very much. I see many posts about my "new direction". I have narrowed it down to 3 ideas---any of which would be an amazing challenge. I will take some time to research those 3 ideas and when I choose one I will probably keep it under the radar for awhile. Thanks for everyone's comments and I hope the new owners enjoy the coins as much as I did.

Gazes, the Kentucky Collection offering is going to be a candy store for Lib $2.50 fans.
Multiple examples of Condition Census coins do not show up very often.
I am sad you are moving on from Lib $2.50's but hopefully the Kentucky Collection will encourage others to collect that set by date and mintmark.

Thank you---and yes you are right that I can't remember the last time this many condition census lib quarter eagles were sold at once (and trust me I have been looking everyday for them)---let alone all pcgs and all but one CAC.

That is an impressive set, checked the preview and all but 3 of 18 are on hold. A real testament to Gazes' eye for quality.

I'm always amazed how fast coins sell on Doug's site. It's interesting, I read a lot of "the sky is falling" threads and then see 15 out of 18 coins On Hold in a matter of hours before even officially being offered to the general public (let alone taken to a show or two)...guess quality sells even when the sky is falling.
I want to shake Gaze's hand on a job well done. Quality never goes out of style. DW has this down to a science.

I did my part to guarantee a quick sell out. Its the first Condition Census coin I have added to an otherwise "middle of the road" set.
Two quick thoughts:
I hardly ever bother to look anywhere other than DWN to add coins to my set; and
CAC always moves them.

Well I checked Doug's site and it looks like my entire collection sold---wow that was quick. Thanks for all your comments. I love that the coins can finally be appreciated together and others see what I had put together. Also, it is great to see that many of the coins went to people who post on here---glad about that. There is not a dud in the bunch. One lesson I learned was not to ever sacrifice quality (I did a few times and quickly sold them because they took away from the collection and just bothered me) and to act quickly when a coin appeared that met my conditions appeared. The hard part will be sitting on my hands when I see condition census lib quarter eagle appear that is original and strong for the grade!

i missed out on buying from the Kentucky collection. I followed very closely from the time DWN sent out the first email notification to the the time all were sold. It is the most impressive sale i have seen from a start to finish. Quality was key. Reading Doug's blog, the only thing i question is "contrarian view". To me this implies that a profit was made. This may be the case but i suspect that was not necessarily the case. For me the most important takeaway is that quality=liquidity. Good stuff sells fast. There is great demand. I wish i had bought the 1844 or the 1866-S. No sour grapes. Just a very good lesson as DWN says in his blog.

It would be inappropriate to draw a conclusion without knowing more about the thought patterns of the buyers. One possibility that comes to mind is that these coins were priced too low. After all, it is very unusual for rare coins to sell that fast in a dealer offering in late August. Prospective buyers may have been willing to pay more than the posted asking prices. Another issue is whether the asking prices were really the selling prices? Did some buyers receive discounts or negotiate lower prices? I do not know.

Stunning set of quarter eagles. Well done! With anything this good on DWN, you have no time to think you have to be ready to act. I can't recall the number of times I have missed out by hesitating...............
