  1. Took great care in bringing in luster that was there in the photos.
  2. IMO it might grade 53 @ PCGS...
  3. What do you say?

I'll go one higher at 58. Nice color.

edited to add: I meant to say 2 grades higher.

Quite a few hits and combined with the large one may do it in.JMO

There are many $10 Gold Eagles out there that have hits like those on the 1906-D and still grade with the big TPG's.

Technically higher than a 53, but it would get a "-" if the TPGs offered those.
    Not worth grading.
It's great if you like inexpensive classic American gold, but it's little more than bullion in that condition.

Good point, they do just look like bad hits, not scratches, so it might straight grade.

You have to ask yourself if you'd want hits that large on a straight graded AU coin. Most people would not, and many dealers would be upset getting those hits sight unseen.

Hits that deep might be ok on a VG, but not a "lightly circulated" AU.

In terms of wear I believe we are looking at an AU55/58, but those hits are massive. The TPGs are quite forgiving on old gold since it is so soft, but the fact that they are on the central portion of the prime focal area will really make this coin a crapshoot for a straight grade.

They might punish this one to xf45 due to the hits

I'm sure no expert, but if the photos are accurate, luster looks 53-55, but could be netted down to 50 for the hits, or no graded as damaged or scratched.

    Melt + $25

Although the coin has a nice strike and luster I don't think it will grade because of the very large hit on the cheek.

Thanks for the great feedback... this is one of my client's who wanted it imaged 2 weeks ago. They wanted me to send it in for grading, but i told them not to. I had actually given a grade of AU50 in a best case scenario.

Not worth it; as others have said, bullion plus a few bucks.

Too many hits in the focal area.....doubt it would straight grade.... Cheers, RickO

Tough call. The base grade is AU, but the marks are big in the wrong the places. I'd say this coin's value would be based upon melt.
