Pics not great but.... help grading 1827 50c?

I realize these pics aren't great. Maybe they're not good enough but any help at all grading this coin would be appreciated. Anything unusual here?

It's not Mint State because there is friction on Ms. Liberty's cheek. Beyond that it's hard to tell from the photos. The coin appears to have a lot of detail and probabal mint surface, but reverse might have been messed with. There is no way to tell for sure from the photo. It probably has not been messed with, but I'm not 100% sure.

If problem free I see an AU55.

  • Thanks guys.

I'm going to post more about this coin in a couple of hours. Thank goodness I posted here before buying. I guess my grading isn't up to the challenge of buying a coin like this off eBay yet.

AU details. There is something going on in the field behind her hair that appears to be an issue with missing metal.

Okay, I know this place is unlike i.e. CCF in that most people here are pros and high end collectors. This may seem like a waste of bandwidth.

This is on eBay in an old ANACS holder graded AU58. I looked at it and thought it could grade MS. Made an offer and received a counter offer. Luckily the counter offer negates the offer I made. I would have honoured the offer without comment had it come to that.

In the interim, seller sent me additional pics which I requested. He asked to send them by email. He did, then sent an email asking if we could do the transaction off Ebay through PayPal.

Some of you have said 'you're going to have to pay tuition in this endeavour'. Big tuition fee saved thanks to you guys.

Looks like a potentially decent coin for an AU55 shot 58.....I would not pay a premium speculating it may go MS - and it sounds like the OP agrees.

It's a dipped AU. In my opinion it has too much remaining meat and too little field chatter to grade AU55 so I would go with AU58.

It's interesting, there's often a range of opinions given when you guys are speculating about a coin that you all know is past AU into the MS range. Here, there's a remarkable consistency. It's like everyone can see right away that it's not MS. That's the thing I have to get down right now.

Reading this from the PCGS site

"The numerical grades MS-60 through MS-70, used to denote a business strike coin that never has been in circulation. A Mint State coin can range from one that is covered with marks (MS-60) to a flawless example (MS-70)"

gives me a hint. It's hard to get my head around the idea that a coin that's 'covered in marks' is graded higher than one that's not. I can't tell circulation marks apart from whatever other events that caused an MS60 coin to be 'covered in marks'.

That wasn't the problem here though. I just missed the cheek thing that Bill pointed out and the possible missing metal.

    Thanks again for the responses.
