Mike,

Aren't they just awesome? But I love all the North American Saturniidae. We have cecropia, polyphemus, luna and promethea in Wisconsin...all large, beautiful silkmoths.

During college and for perhaps 10 years after graduating I worked pretty extensively with all these species. Using fall & winter locally collected cocoons in addition to cocoons obtained in trade with other hobbyists I would breed the females. This was quite the process...you would cage a female (simple, small chicken wire cages I would construct) and place the female outside just as it got dark. Wild males would be drawn in by the pheromones released by the 'calling' female. If you were lucky the next morning the caged female would be paired up with a wild male, her on the inside of the cage, him on the outside. Pairing continued until nightfall. Next the female would deposit the fertilized eggs...there were multiple methods to get this done and harvest them. Using petri dishes I would incubate the eggs and caterpillars would emerge in about 10 days. These would be raised through the summer inside sleeved branches of the appropriate food plants...specially designed sleeves to prevent predation on the caterpillars from birds, wasps, etc. Cocoon harvest would then be in late summer/early fall. It was hard work, labor intensive. A number of breeders do pretty well selling fertilized eggs and cocoons. It was a hobby for me, I never took it to those levels.
