I don't know about laquered, I kind of doubt it, but if they are "too bright" they almost certainly have been processed. The "real thing" has more subdued luster.

Here is one that grades MS-66.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Years ago it was very common to re-plate or reprocess steel cents and then sell them as novelties. They don't look "right" and will be mushy since they are re-plated circulated coins. To this day they show up all the time.

The replated versions were very common in the 1960s. I'm sure there are plenty of them out there though I doubt it would be worthwhile to do replating today.

I have a funky Steel Cent as well. Not only does the surface look funky but it is also toned. Too say the least, it's raw. There have been lots of strange things done to Steel Cents over the years.

Not really looking for much these days but if I were, it might be a toner.

Some 1943 cents will look a little "odd" due to use of chromium plated dies for part of the time at Philadelphia, and possibly the other mints. Surface will be brighter, but sometimes has microscopic crazing -- use about 40x.

I have some very nice '43 steel cents. I purchased two bank rolls over 30 years ago.... I opened one last month (posted about that here) and was amazed at the condition of the coins - bright and lustrous.... I have not opened the other roll. Cheers, RickO

I have automotive parts, 50+ years old, stripped and plated, and one of the plating process is zinc, be it "clear" (natural), golden or black. I have tossed 1943's in, and they come back "shiny" Of course, I also have tossed in random wheaties and memorials, and they zinc plate fine.

The picture is a steering gear box, rusty and nasty, covered in grime, crud, grease, etc. AFTER

    Cents are easy to do.

It is has been my experience that War Time cents that take on colors like this have been processed, but I've not seen a ton of them.

Yes, this coin has issues and is not natural. Lol
