Photobucket is Doomed

I used to use Photobucket to host posted pics, but it turns out on this site you can save pics to your hard drive and the image shows up in your message, bypassing all the P-bucket riga-a-ma-roll.

Anyway, P-bucket has cut off my free account and want's $5.99 / mo.

Sorry, you guys aren't worth $5.99 / mo. MHO LOL

Yup, no one is going to pay to host images anymore.

When you post an image here from your hard drive it becomes hosted here. You can even use the snipping tool and paste a screen capture into the message and never have to save it at all.

Photobucket was tolerable at best when it was free, but at a cost no matter how low it's not worth it.

PB served us well for awhile, but it was never really a trouble free site. that apparently caught up to it as the rest of the world had passed it by. it's funny what Goldbully said, imagine how crowded that corner of heaven is now?? I remember when you could go to the video store and rent a VHS player!! so sad, now PB will join the 8-track tape, the cassette, Beta, VHS, rotary dial phones, the typewriter, vacuum tube TV's, solid state, etc.

For hosting images to display on this forum,
the improved image uploading right here in this forum seems to have helped a lot of people share their images.
So it's even better than a separate hosting site, for this purpose.

I pulled outta there about a moth ago. Doomed is the word for sure. I've lost all of my coin images not to mention family photos. Extortion is the word that comes to mind. I canceled my account, the bums.

My images are posting again after not posting previously. Perhaps they changed their mind?

The image was showing up last night when I first posted it, but not any more. Must have been a glitch.

I'm using imgur now anyway, which still offers free third party hosting.

There are so many informative websites I used to read that have been badly damaged by the unexpected loss of Photobucket-hosted images. Now you scroll through them, and there's nothing to look at but the dreaded "Please Update Your Account" image. They could have at least given their users a clear heads-up a few months in advance so people could migrate to a new site. Some of these images will never come back because of how much work it is to upload them all again.

Based on the amount of work they created for everyone, the collateral damage to existing websites, and the perceived extortion, I downloaded all of my images and closed my account last week. I will not re-open it, even if they go back to free use.

I moved my images to Image Shack. I guess I'll see how long it takes them to get greedy (i.e., stupid) like Photo-suckit.

Sure, I get all my real work done on a desktop right now as well.

But I wouldn't agree that 'real computers' can't be mobile. The idea is that a pocket sized device will soon enough have the power to do serious computing and when it does, you'll simply interface a mouse, keyboard and monitor with it in a seamless way (wireless), do your real work at your desk, then carry it away in your pocket. No need for that tower any more.

True computer guys can chime in here, but I'm assuming that eventually, there won't be a need for a locally hosted OS either. That'll change things.

My philosophy when it comes to digital data:

    • Upload or host it wherever, but always keep the original in your possession on your own hardware.
    • Be disciplined enough to perform your own backups on-time, in a format you can actually use.
    • Keep a physical copy of the backup (chip, portable drive, tapes, etc) in a remote location in your own possession.
    • Hardware will eventually fail. Software companies are here today, gone tomorrow.
    • Operating systems will eventually fail.
    • If it's absolutely critical, keep a non-electronic version and store it securely.

no outside entity is trustworthy when it comes to data , they want to control me or market at me I reject that model. Pocket sized devices are awful. I'm sure they will be powerful enough but I want a 22 inch screen not a 2 or 4 or 8 inch screen . I want a real keyboard , I want to work at a desk and when I'm not at the desk I don't particularly want to be connected. I d I want a mobile for. I do use my phone to get on the internet , to read emails to navigate to places to look up a restaurant but thats all . I don't read this forum on a mobile device , I won't write emails on a mobile except one liners and only if its an emergency.

Ebay is always reminding me about their stupid ebay mobile app. Its garbage , I won't buy from an app and I won't list with an app.

I totally get it. The masses aren't as discerning as you. They don't get that it's not a good idea to throw the gates to your data open to anyone and everyone.

By the way, 22" screens look small to me now.

Re: the mouse/keyboard/monitor, you will use all those things as they are now. It's just that you won't need a 'tower' which houses mobo/CPU/GPU etc.

I can not download my albums. Sent email to PB their reply: This is a known issue and they are working on fixing it. They also said I can download one image at a time. I have thousands of images on PB. I have a paid account, they better fix this soon.

  • StorkStork Posts: 5,206 ✭✭✭✭✭

Hope you were paying for a higher resolution storage (if there was even an option for it) for when you retrieve your photos. At some point they started saving in a pretty low resolution format (which REALLY sucks if you were trying to use them as your primary online back up method...hopefully not).

OP-- the fee they want for third party hosting isn't the $5.99/month but the $39.99/mo version (only $399 if you pay for the whole year).

Yep, ruined threads, horrible resolution storage, and a completely dysfunction web site. I'm not paying that kind of money to keep my old posts alive.

Great to upload directly here (and more and more sites are doing better like this), BUT it's nice to have an uploaded/third party host for those sites not quite as enlightened as this one and for sharing albums. Collective coin is nice, but no good for my dogs/family stuff. Imgur/facebook/dropbox/Google/iCloud can cover things though.

I bought a website about 15 years ago and pay about $3 a month for hosting. I use it for all my picture hosting and have few GB uploaded and like 10Gb bandwidth per month.

Folks complaining about Photobucket and not being able to find somewhere to put their pictures are either lazy or just lazy.

Just push the "block sender" button, and leave photobucket in your rear view mirror! Photobucket was not that great when it was free because they have the dumbest programmers on the Internet. Their system would be running fine, and then they would introduce some "enhancements" and it would be broken for a week or so while they were fixing it.

In the mean time I do need to find another picture hosting site. I did not lose an pictures because all of my photos are on my computer hard drive and back up systems.

Doubt that they are working hard to fix it. They may view making it difficult as a way to keep accounts from closing for at least a little while longer.

I was able to download 1 album early on and then it kept failing. Already have copies elsewhere, though not organized the same way as on PB. Was downloading more just to have a copy organized that way, but really don't need them or PB anymore.

But will leave the free account in place on the small chance things ever change and old threads with those pics become useful again. No risk to leaving the account just sitting there open that I can see.

Unfortunately, I can now only d/l ONE PB photo at a time to my PC. When I first heard about PB's new $ policy a couple weeks ago I was able to d/l one of my large group folders intact (with over 300 images) to my hard drive, but ever since then they only let me d/l images one at a time. :(

I haven't cancelled my free PB acct. yet in case they reconsider when they realize most people are leaving them, or in case they sell their site to a more reasonable company.
Meanwhile, I've moved over to pCloud which is working ok for me so far.

I only have a few videos stored on PB but so far have been unable to d/l them to my PC and keep getting "We're sorry but this video has been renamed or deleted by its owner" (neither is true).

I never thought that growing old would happen so fast.

There is a faster way to save your images. Go to the bucket and display the image. Right click it and save the image. You can save a lot of images in a short amount of time. The download function there is trashed.
