1900 O over CC Morgan??

Picked this up today. I think it might be a 1900 O over CC... It's not as prominent as other examples online so I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't. It still does look quite odd if it isn't. Thoughts?

It looks like a VAM-10a. Did you pick it up unattributed?

  • mannie graymannie gray Posts: 7,259 ✭✭✭✭✭

I could well be wrong but from the pics it still looks like VAM-7 to me.
VAM-7 is an O/CC variety, as is VAM-10, and quite a few others.

Yes. VAM 10A O/CC. If you cherrypicked that you did very well. Too bad it's not the unclashed VAM 10 though

The die crack from 1 in date to neck point, the die clash by neck, and the small speck inside the 9 of date mark it as a V-10A.

Yes, I fully agree with Vam 10A! You guy's won't believe it but I paid $15 for this coin at a pawn shop..... I bought it because it was high grade plus I swear I could see something extending out of the O. I didn't have a loupe either. Don't mind my bad pictures here but I am ecstatic about this right now!! Pretty good condition coin, the picture is bad for the feathers on the chest but they are all there, the lighting makes it looks worn but it's not. Too bad PCGS nor NGC recognize Vam-10A. Edit: most of the scratches are on the capsule. I think AU is a good grade for this?

  • jtlee321jtlee321 Posts: 2,364 ✭✭✭✭✭

WOW!!! I am blown away with that. $15.00 is an insane price for a pawn shop to be selling any Morgan at! I'd be checking there all the time. That was a fantastic cherrypick. :)

  • Spartcom5Spartcom5 Posts: 397 ✭✭✭

Any thoughts on grade wise? I will probably be sending it out to PCGS soon.

  • CascadeChrisCascadeChris Posts: 2,525 ✭✭✭✭✭

Sweet! If it comes back straight graded you just made $500-700+ as it looks like a 58/63 slider with 62/3 being highly likely going off of those pics. You did very well! Now send her in to be slabbed pronto

Looks like a solid au58 to me. With the new pics you can see rub on her cheek bone and neck. No matter how you look at it, it is still a really cool find.

Hmm interesting seems better than this AU 58 no? https://coins.ha.com/itm/morgan-dollars/1900-o-cc-1-au58-pcgs-pcgs-population-96-5119-ngc-census-79-2253-numismedia-wsl-price-for-problem-free-ngc-pcgs/a/131540-21603.s?hdnJumpToLot=1x=0&y=0

Oh I also want to note when I opened up the capsule on the inside there was a fingerprint. Knowing the pawn shop this came from, they pick up every coin by the face, I used the same technique I used when I had to remove a finger print on my 1902 S using a little bit of acetone. Just to be safe, honestly at that shop you never know. I think they were the ones who put it in the capsule. In the end my 02 S came back AU 58!

The luster looks to be all there, but all the marks keeps it 58ish imo, from the photos. Nice pick up and let us know what she grades out as.

Looked a little closer(on my phone) and do see a bit of wear, sticking with 58. But its beaming.

The morgan in the link you posted has a nice original skin, the one you have has likely been dipped at some point. It is however more eye appealing due to the luster and I think would be more desirable than the other example. The rub on the cheek and neck is going to hold it back from a higher grade than AU58.

Should be cool to see what happens! I was just hoping it would beat my AU 58 1902 S Morgan for $20!

What a great score. I was unaware that you could buy junk Morgans for under 20 bucks a piece. If you paid $15 for that, I am wondering what else is in the case?

Got it sent in. The general consensus seemed to be AU 58 no lower with a slight chance of going higher but unlikely. I would be ecstatic if I could just get an MS 60. I'll know by mid August!

Its either coming back 58 or 62/3 and my money is on 62... Barring anything we can't see like hairlines etc that could give it a details grade.

One guy I did show it to mentioned something about how it might've been cleaned, so I haven't ruled that out yet either. That'd be the absolute worst case scenario...

Dipped yes, cleaned don't think so. IMO 61/62 as above.

Is that the only silver dollar they had? I'd be buying all they had at $15 a piece.
    Very nice pickup there!

I will say that my O/CC is a bit more apparent than that one....I have never checked which VAM or whatever that mine is classified under. Cheers, RickO
