I've been intrigued by these things for years.
Finally found one I like that isn't a fortune.
I've yet to fill that bucket list 1848-CAL quarter eagle so this will do til then..

The LONG Moffat & Co story is here:
http://www.coinfacts.com/historical_notes/history_of_moffat_and_company.htm
The part I particularly like is this:
THE STORY OF THE
MOFFAT & CO. GOLD COINS
While not the first private coining establishment, Moffat & Co. was by far the most important in the first period of California private gold minting. It enjoyed the highest reputation of all the coining companies, affirmed by the Federal Government when it asked the two surviving members of the firm to initiate the United States Branch Mint in San Francisco.

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
Yep I like it a lot
Very nice coin with a lot of historical significance.

I've probably panned for gold where it came from for that coin.
I can remember looking for one of those about 20 years ago but never found one that I liked.
Very nice!!!

Very nice old gold.... Yep, I have panned a lot of gold in California... up around Oroville mostly... also panned in AZ, WA and New Zealand...found gold...dust and nuggets...never found a gold coin though...Cheers, RickO
When I had the shop, a guy came in with a (IIRC) yet another Moffat $5 that he dug in his rose garden in Sonora, CA.
BUT.... while digging, his shovel struck the coin....ALMOST.. .dead center and not only gashed it, but bent it, too.
So..... I ...almost.... got one in 1984.... :'(
but i bet it grade "details."
very cool. i have one too...it's a cool piece of history. nice pick up!
