Airplanenut had a really ugly coin as I recall.

This is a token, and it is the worst piece in my collection by far. It is a CSS Virginia token which was made circa 1905. This piece is made of iron that was recovered from the hull of the Virginia (a.k.a. "The Merrimac") after the Confederates blew it up on purpose to avoid its capture by the Union. The Union Monitor and Confederate Merrimac fought to a draw at Hampton Roads, Virginia in the spring of 1862. Iron rusts, and that's what has happened to this piece.

This was once listed as a Civil War token, but it was delisted after it was determined that the piece was made after war. You can find decent examples of this piece, but they have gotten pricey. I've heard that they have sold for over $3,000 at auction.

I have another item that was made from the CSS Virginia hull, a miniature horseshoe. That piece is in pristine condition, cost a lot less and is even mounted on the original card upon which it was sold.

A neat piece, Bill, even with the corrosion. I have to wonder where those were made, since it says it was made from the "Merrimac", the union ship the Confederates converted into an ironclad, not the "Virginia." Maybe they were struck up Nawth.

I just mentioned in another thread, I have an almost slick IHC from when I was a youngster of 9 or 10....It somehow survived in my possessions after moves all over the country and world...(obviously not worth anything or it would have been lost in marital ventures gone awry - ).... Cheers, RickO

No, it was made in the South, probably in Virginia. Here is the horseshoe piece that I have that was made from the same recovered iron from the CSS Virginia.

I've never considered acquiring a truly ugly coin. Of course opinions of how ugly my coins are may vary.
