Random thought on GSA Dollars...Long Term Storage

How do you store your GSA Dollars? In or out of the box? Mine are stored in the SDB with the original boxes at home. I know thousands have been tucked away in their original boxes for decades. Any experience with contaminates from the factory boxes causing problems? I would prefer them stored in their original boxes. Am I over thinking this? Take care...

Storing the cases inside the original boxes may produce some toning...if you like that stuff...which I do!

If they haven't turned yet from their inserts they never will. Or I should say, it's so slow that they never will in our lifetime. However, too much heat or too much humidity should always be avoided but the main enemy I see is simply protecting them from getting scratched up.
I don't have any personal experience but they do take up less room without the boxes if that would be an issue.

The one's I have in the original containers are doing fine... no visible changes... I opened them from the original shipping box (purchased from gsaguy).... and have had them for about 13 years now...Cheers, RickO
I think that in this case, the government packaging devices have served these coins well. I don’t have a lot of personal ownership experience with these coins, but from what I’ve seen, I have never seen one go bad in the holder. That seems to be especially true with the pieces that have been stored in the dark in their GSA boxes.
Heat and light promote toning, and the vast majority of the GSA dollars have been separated from their original boxes and certificates. On Saturday one of the dealers at a local show had empty GSA boxes for sale @ $2.00 each … LOL. This has occurred mostly for the convenience of national show dealers who need to travel as light as possible.
Unfortunately we can’t say the same good things about other U.S. government coin packaging. Those who collect modern Proof sets can attest that some of the inserts in the plastic holders have not been kind to coins they were supposed to protect. But that is for another topic.
The original packing has worked well for storing the GSA dollars, cardboard boxes included.
However, the plastic case is similar for the silver proof Ike's from the early 70s. And this packaging really did an ugly number on those proof Ike's that were left in there. Haze, cloudiness,etc.
Mine have remained untarnished.... They are stored in a coin cabinet with no environmental heat or humidity that could accelerate deterioration. Cheers, RickO
