They used to call them Gem at the 65 grade. What do you think?

Bunch of 1904-O's in 65PL have hit the market recently. Must have been a nice hoard.

I think it is hard to grade by a picture and that trying to assess quality on PL/DMPL coins from pictures is doubly hard. nice try, though.

Not just an increase in 65Pl pops.
    I purchased this 1904-o 66PL in 2005.
At the time the pop was 57 in 66PL and none higher.
    Now the pop is 111 in 66PL, 12 in 66+PL, and 2 in 67PL.

I would never try to grade from that fist image.

Yours looks like a shot + today, at the least.

Yeah, it has already made one trip in for re-grade. That's how I got the Trueview.
Will probably be sent in again. The mirrors are pretty deep for a PL, should earn it a plus at least.

@10000lakes ...That is a very nice Morgan...nice mirrors and great hair detail.... If it shows that well in pictures, must be really nice in hand... Cheers, RickO

Both of these pieces are very well struck examples of the 1904-O dollar. Most of them don't have any breat feather detail, but both of them are complete.

The picture that shows the whole slab does not look like an upgrade candidate to me. There are too many marks on the cheek.

Nice coin, just not the best picture.

Since Day 1 at PCGS, "gem" was supposed to start at 66. And that was 30+ years ago, before gradeflation took its toll.

    Interesting. I didn't know that.

I've always thought of gem as being 65 quality or better.

    My understanding is:
    BU- 60-62
    Choice- 63-64
    Gem- 65+

I've seen these descriptions for the top grades:
    Gem > 65
    Premium Gem > 66
    Superb Gem > 67

I don't like the uneven toning on the obverse.

I've always thought that once you get above 65, you can call it whatever you want. And people usually do.
