Would you buy this? 1874 Gold dollar

Hey guys just bought this today for $70, was quite hesitant but it was my first gold coin and I didn't want to pass it up... Should I take it off the chain and put it in a case or leave as is and maybe even wear it? Thoughts?

I think it should be worn. Either you or your girlfriend.
I was thinking of putting it in one of those coin bezel holders so it's more safe. But I'd have to crack the loop hole at the top off... thoughts?
Leave it as is.
Yea I'll probably leave it. After all it's been like this for 100+ years. I paid $70 for this whole piece, it was put together in 1905.

Looks like a great deal.
Can you tell us a little more about the watch? That might be where the money is .....
I collect watches and I can say the watch is nothing special! Really only like $50 but together like this as a piece that's been together for 100+ years it's worth a lot more. The chain is even dated to 1904, inside the pocket watch it's dated to 1905. I assume the coin meant something to the person as well although we will never know!
I would leave it as it is. The coin is in very bad shape. I think that it was holed and plugged before it was attached, rather crudely, to the watch chain. The 1874 gold dollar is a very common date, and in that condition the coin is of little importance. If it were an 1861-D or some other key date it would be a bit different, but not for this piece.
Interesting item and likely worth the price paid..... I would leave it as is.... Cheers, RickO
Thanks guys definitely the first I have seen! Still looking for a gold coin that hasn't been altered. I think I will take the coin off this chain and put it on a necklace and wear it to the next coin show. I doubt it can get any worse wearing it on a necklace. Only thing I am thinking is should I put the coin in a bezel and wear it like that or leave it and wear as is?
To discuss in a general fashion: what makes people ask the group's advice when they have no intention of following it?
I wasn't not following the advice! I was just wondering if a bezel would be a bad decision. For the most part I am intending to leave it alone on the chain as was the advice given before!
I just worry that the solder isn't as strong as it was 100 years ago and I'd be devastated if it were to fall off.
Under the circumstances, you made a good choice. I take it that you are somewhat of a beginner to be even asking. The price is good. Seventy bucks is pizza money. Many, many,....MANY, years ago I bought one just like it. The only difference was that mine was polished so heavily that it could be used to signal a ship at sea. In the dark. Under extreme foggy conditions. I thought I scored. I was young. I put it on a cheap chain and presented it to the future Mrs. Hydrant as a love offering. When I gave it to Her, she gave me the the " rolling eyeballs- big deal look." I was devastated. That was 40 years ago and I hadn't seen that coin since..............UNTIL. Last April my youngest son got married up in Salt Lake. Of course there was a photographer and lots of pictures. My favorite picture? OF ALL TIME???? It's a picture of me and the lovely Mrs. Hydrant surrounded by our nine grandchildren. In the picture, if you look close, Mrs. Hydrant is wearing that gold coin, on the cheap chain. Life is good. Enjoy it while you have it. You made a good choice. You never know.
It's one of them pieces that looks better in the pocket than in hand. A perfect pocket piece, as it were.

I like it, good deal.
It would have actually been hanging out of the pocket lol....
For $70 your in good shape. The melt value of the coin is $61.52. Me personally, I'd leave the coin alone.
Actually it (watch) would have been in the vest pocket...lol. Keeping time, I suppose.

I thought you were referring to the coin not the pocket watch haha! Keeping the coin in your pocket with the watch... But yea the pocket watch sits in a watch pocket, the clip clips onto a belt where ever, and the coin hangs as decor.
No
I'd leave it as is and put it on my key ring.
Leave it!
Great deal

Wouldn't it be cool if we (as a people) were still that stylish and cultured ?
