Are we allowed to have a discussion about this medal?

Please don't take me asking this question as having a particular stance about the medal, I'm merely wondering if having a discussion about it, which would inevitably touch on sensitive subjects, is allowed.

True, I was just wondering if whoever is in charge of these things would rather nip it in the bud versus risking the conversation heading into unseemly territory.

I'm still brand new here so I don't want to cause any waves.

It seems like a lot of people have a problem with the medal in question but let this one fly without a comment...

One depicts a new twist on Lady Liberty, the other depicts a plot line straight out of American Horror Story.

It would be very possible if the series discontinue with a very short life spam.

What sensitive subjects? You mean, like, why the US Mint keeps producing way too many over-commercialized, over-priced, modern pieces of dreck? Oh yeah, I forgot that's JMHO.

Or am I missing some other sensitive subject?

While very much in the current style of US Mint artwork, the portrait is well done. I especially like the treatment of the hair and the prominent stars. The medal should look very good if struck as a deep cameo proof.

Sensitive subject.. can't think of any. But I don't believe everyone is comfortable to see this series continue with lady liberty of all the different racial and ethnic groups of our country.

If the Mint does have this in plan and makes an announcement, I will enroll 10 sets ASAP.

My only problem with it is that it's a medal and not a coin. Love the design and the concept, but just want to have that "One Dollar" on it, so will probably pass.

Her being black doesn't bother me, but those jumbo stars do.

With the last 10 years of moderns there is just something missing. I am not sure why the newer designs bother me, maybe it's how clean they look, they almost look forced, stiff, unnatural. The older designs have more soul.

I'm a fan of the old clean lined Art Deco coins and medals, but the modern 'clean design' ones seem sterile. Maybe something lost in translation using computers? Dunno and don't know enough about art and sculpture to know what's missing. Other than it seems like maybe an artist with a background in sculpture might help.

That said, I like this one except the stars are disproportionately large. Like if she turns her head suddenly she might get a jab in her temple.

I haven't looked at the US mint site in ages. Will it be in silver or gold? Proof?

The stars are an abomination. They were ugly 150 years ago and remain so.

Realizing that the illustration is not an actual coin --- Balance of the design is good but detail is entirely too soft and mushy - technically it looks like so many other US Mint coins that utterly fail to use technology to make better, sharper, coins and medals.

I do not like the design.

Okay I’ll break the ice. Do you think that the next Ms. Liberty might be an Asian, a Polynesian, Jewish, Mid-Eastern or some other ethnic group other than African-American? I suppose that Sacajawea might take care of the Native-American representation.

We have had two African-Americans in a row, counting the High Relief coin that the mint marketed last year. Do you think that they are going to make it three in a row?

I agree with the concept of depicting Ms. Liberty from another race, but if the mint makes it three African-Americans in row, I’m going to start to wonder. How PC does the mint have to be before it becomes another sort of racism?

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

That is the plan. Many ethnicities from what I heard.

Almost all modern coin/medal design seem to be flat and of lack of dimension. Lets say this medal for example, most collectors consider the stars are ugly. But what if they redesign the stars to more realistic instead of something flat that looks like a decor from a 99 Cent store.

That coin is fugly. 99% because that headband with the huge stars is WAY over the top.
Would any real person ever wear something like that?

I'll pass, unless I can buy below melt.

The Royal and Royal Canadian Mint are putting the US Mint to shame in terms of artistry IMO.

I have to agree, while I rarely go to the US Mint site I do go to the Royal Canadian Mint to see the wildlife coins.

Send it back? There's 62,000 pounds of copper in that thing! Melt it down!

    Sir, you are absolutely correct!

    What was I thinking!?!?

Now for the resulting melding pot, let's decide if they are melted with it or sent to France.

Melting our statue of Liberty? Somehow a witch hunt and set the lady on fire comes to mind. I will sponsor a boat load of marshmallow.
