What do you think is going on with the reverse on this piece?

It doesn't look like odd toning, per se...especially by looking at the star around 3:30pm. Any thoughts?

It appears to be a toning pattern where one coin sat on top of another of the same. The toning gave it that ghost look, and I think it is cool. I may also be way off base.

Think it could have been in a leather wallet for many years.
And the leather picked up the design just enough to transfer
the design after the coin shifted...crazy guess.
How do we account for the ghost star just below the star after the " in fight...that ghost star has texture to it and is slightly raised
Since you are supplying 3D info not in the 2D photo, this is helpful!
Sounds like a double strike.
Struck twice but shifted in the collar between strikes.

Never mind,. Self-edited comment about the state of numismatic education in this country.
Hey guys. Look at the OP photo again. Pick any raised part of the design. Note how the identical design is close to it yet is flat and twisted out of alignment? This is a characteristic of a piece that was struck once and then shifted slightly and was struck again. The second strike flattened the first one yet it still can be seen where it once was raised on the medal/token.
Extremely neat piece!!
The die shifted, not the medal.....correct?
Very cool piece..... I think I just hypnotized myself following the star lines up close for a few seconds... At least seeing funny anyway
Successful trades.... MichaelDixon,
Looks like the reverse die shifted. Now why am I saying that? Clue: What would the piece look like if the medal turned in the press before the second strike and the dies did not move?
That is a super interesting medal.... would love to examine that in hand... Cheers, RickO
