1811/9 Dime - Whats your preference?

I am stuck on my 1811/9 dimes as to which I should include in my registry set. I really love the first coin and its a later die state graded PCGS 63 that has wonderful toning. The other is a PCGS 64+ that was previously in the Gardner collection and recently sold in Pogue V. I love them both so I will be keeping them both but which should I include in my PCGS registry sets. Please indicate your preference.
coin 1 - PCGS 63 - coin 2 PCGS 64+

I voted for the bottom (PCGS 64+) coin. While I am generally a fan of toned coins, and the top coin is really a great piece in its own right, the lower coin just made me say "wow" in terms of sharpness and surfaces.

In other news, we now know you are hoarding 1811/9 dimes. You have two of them, and that counts as a hoard in the world of better date Bust coins!

I like the look of the 63 better, but voted for the 64+.
Why wouldn't you list the higher graded coin in your registry?

Although I usually like original toning, I think that the colors detract from the design on the MS-63 piece.

    Bottom - no brainer.

The P64 has exceptional eye-appeal. The P63 has somewhat of what I call "camouflage" toning, which detracts from eye appeal by making the details less clear.

The toning on the P63 is not to my liking, too many uneven areas. Absolutely beautiful P64!

I like the deep toning of the top piece. Both are nice and I would like to see luster in hand but top piece is more attractive to my eye.

64 for eye appeal and strike.

Totally subjective, I picked the 63 because I think it has more character.

I like the 63 better and would sell the 64 to get money to buy other Dimes.

Hey Dimeman- Both coins are really terrific looking and very difficult to part with!

    Both of them are great!

I like the shattered reverse die, that is more striking than the overdate.

Since you're planning to keep both, stick the higher grade one in the registry set.

Though I suppose with the two next each other your eye would naturally gravitate to the toned 63.

The 63 looks original even if it may not be my preferred look. The 64 has been dipped, and the images don't show very much luster especially on the obverse IMHO.

Love the matching die cracks on the reverse.

I like the album toning and color on the MS63, but the MS64 is also lovely. I saw the 64 in hand and was not sure as to of it had been dipped, if so its been a long time ago. Easton had a great eye for eye appeal!

I voted for the 63 mainly for it's originality. Both are very nice pieces. ;)

I don't do registry sets but isn't the idea to get the highest graded coins in the set? For that reason, I chose the 64. I love them both and would be proud to own them.

Most agree that Registry sets are for the highest graded coins. My definition for coins that should be in the registry sets are the finest using the criteria of Eye Appeal, Toning, Surface quality, Originality and Strike. Thats how I choose between coins within the same grade or even 1 point different, hence the reason for this poll.

I prefer the second coin.... looks well struck and has a more natural appearance. Cheers, RickO

nice to hear that. I have numerically downgraded in my primary Registry Set more than once...eye appeal being my most heavily-weighted criterion

IF I had a real choice, I would pick the 64+ obverse and the 63 reverse.
The cheek on the 63 is somewhat distracting which is the ONLY thing to quibble with on the wonderful 63 and would otherwise be a 64.

Not surprised that OP has been conflicted between the two lovely dimes!

Oreville - waiting a long time to hear your response! However, i didn't figure that you were going to pick the obverse of one coin and the reverse of the others. LOL. You're the only one that did that. I don't know how to list your selection on my registry set???>

    Great stuff!
First is just a little elater die state, both are cracked, so we are talking degrees here.
I am familiar with the 64 and have tremendous appreciation for that piece and know it is lustrous and sweet. The first has more color as you know but it is th slower graded one. I will buy the one that you don't need to make it easier on you ;)
Or trade, I have a few that you want and money isn't the issue.;)

I like the color on the 63 but voted for the 64.

I like the 64 better overall and wouldn't it be the logical choice if you are going for grade in your reg. set?

I like Gotthebug's circ., too, because it's a much later die state and clearly shows the cud on the obverse which is just beginning on the earlier state 64 but not visible on the slightly later state 63, due to weakness of strike. The circ example is the only one that clearly shows the obv. cud. and the reverse cracking is quite advanced at this stage.

I like the second example better but only because it was struck better.
