FAKE 1889-cc NEW CAMERA CLOSE UP......

Back story, Won this 89cc on eBay, sent to our host. Got it body bagged as added mint mark. Opened a not as described case. Case got resolved in favor of the seller! Reason: "Since you sent the item in the mail to be graded by a 3rd party, that voids any eBay Money back Guarantee Coverage."
So, just got off the phone with eBay high value rep and got my refund. Told to keep the coin. Rep fully understood my dilemma on sending to eBay approved grading service and that then voids their guaranty!
Good old eBay! Love them, again.

    Bob,

Could you post a closeup pic of the mint mark area? Looks pretty decent from afar...

    TIA,

Hard to tell from far away, any close-up photos? The mint mark does look to have a different color than the rest of the coin though.

Got to love the protections eBay provides as a buyer.

    TIA,

Sure fooled me to the tune of $78. Wonder why not TV it as I paid for that and it would be a helpful educational tool for all.

    Glad things worked out.
I remember your original post on this purchase.
Looks like the Ebay seller had more than one 89-cc.
Makes you wonder if the gold coins that were sold are also fake.

Here is a pic of the other 89-cc from same seller. CC mint mark looks fatter than usual I wonder what the source is for the added mint mark.

He offered me this one for $600 saying it was of lesser quality....oh my, glad I didn't bite on that one too!

Once I notified him that PCGS said it was bad he offered me an ounce of gold and cash, then when I said no to that he offered me a graded $10 gold piece. I said no, just refund me. Then he changed his tune and said no refund as that's what it says in the auction and he'd fight me to the end. Oh well, the thrills of shopping for coins on ebay...!!

The sale price was 78 bucks or that is what you were out after a refund for shipping and grading?

If the purchase price was only 78 bucks I can't imagine him offering an ounce of gold and cash instead of refunding the 'call the police" purchase price of 78 bucks.

Even at 1900 bucks, does anyone actually purchase an 1889 CC in decent shape hoping it is legit, or knowing it is legit?

XF40 shows price guide over 3000 bucks.

$78 was the grading fee at PCGS. $1,340 was the purchase price. Was listed as a 1989cc or some such mistake.

I see the slight color difference now that it's blown up this big.
The shape of the C's is correct and whoever did this has some talent. When I received it I was pretty stoked. I saw that the dollar was not a fake and it had the correct CC's. I thought it was a "far date" VAM perhaps a VAM 6. Vamworld does not have a pic of that VAM of course.
So, off it went to PCGS. I expected a possible cleaned obverse and would not have cared if that had been the case and $1,340 would still have been okay.
Never suspected that it had added mint marks

His 2014 W gold eagle uncirc that sold for $2149 is a decent fake. The mintmark is too small and the date is the wrong font.

I do have a new camera set up and will be working on taking pics tomorrow night when my tutor gets here. So, with luck we will have better pics.
Yes, he did ship via USPS.

Hmmmm, blocked from leaving any feedback on this transaction.....wonder why that happened. Open case, case closed, appealed loss return, now win case.....but not able to leave feedback. Guess eBay knew what I'd do but wonder why they wouldn't want me to warn others.

feedback shows he buys a lot of cheap jewelry from china, most likely for resale. Probably same place he buys his coins.

That second closeup-up pic clearly shows the added mint mark. The area around it is definitely rougher than the surrounding field and also different in color (as mentioned by others). Wow.

I'd say he has real problems right about now.

I don't know if you have ever purchased CF stuff off ebay other than this one.

The only times I have were CF SanDisk Micro SD Cards.

Good but not a great deal and the labeling/packaging was easy and good.

Popped them in and 128 GB shows to your PC but checking with RUFUS revealed it was about 6 MB.

I was the second to send the Rufus printout and they refunded my money almost right then.

Couldn't leave feedback and got other notices informing me I may have been scammed.

The language attempted to assure me I had probably not been as if they were hedging and didn't want to borrow trouble.

The language departed greatly from forthright and full disclosure.

Reporting fast and getting my automatic refunds seemed to result in one hand not knowing what the other was doing in carrying out procedure.

They certainly did not include language to say your Micro SD cards are known to be CF.

I'll bet they won't contact the others who bought a coin like yours and tell them straight up, which is sad.

SanDisk changed their packaging and labeling on the chips shortly afterwards although I'm sure their losses were large.

    So frustrating! I hate thieves.!.!

Wow... without magnification or close inspection, that looks authentic... Your picture though, when magnified, clearly shows the MM to be tooled in some manner...That is nasty... Glad you were recompensed. Cheers, RickO

I can see a slight color difference easily enough looked over as a reflection. I can't see enough to have any idea the CC has been added in any form or fashion, regardless if with adhesives or liquid metal. Much better pix are needed for me to say I can see anything conclusive or would think anything alarming about seeing that coin outside the context and facts presented here about it, which may tend to prejudice our opinions.

I respectfully disagree. The boundary of the "color difference" is sharp; in other words, the lighter color around the mint mark does not fade into the surrounding field area. The surface texture is also different. Clearly, the mint mark area has been messed with. Whether or not it is enough to say the mint mark has been added is moot - just the fact that it has been messed with should be enough to steer anyone away from the coin (no fault to the OP - you couldn't tell from the original pics).

I could not leave negative feedback because I had already left positive feedback! So, I modified my feedback to add that PCGS said it was counterfeit.
Now that I did that the seller has managed to have my feedback removed completely. What a scumbag.

Newest close up clearly shows how difficult it would be to determine the added mint marks when in hand. Subtle field polishing which certainly could look like pocket wear. I don't fault myself for missing this but thank PCGS for catching it. C's are the proper shape and size. This was done expertly and I hope I never see another!
