Dang it! I don't want to collect coins again!
You guys are killing me with your South American coins! I have a car to finish restoring and other collections I'm working on right now.
I stopped through here on a lark. I used to collect dark side coins, but mostly U.S. stuff and I was curious what was in this forum. I'd been looking at some British coins lately, but haven't bought anything...not for many years. So, it turns out that I have some South American and Mexico currency because I love the American Bank Note designs. Since I really like the symbolism in the South American currency I opened the thread on South American coins. Bang! Whoa! Now I'm hooked. Thanks a lot! Can't decide whether I'm happy or irritated.
Collecting is a sickness, and now I need some Darkside stuff. I guess good news is I'm starting from zero. I can go any direction. But which way?

How about a collection of Latin American sun faces?
8 Reales Madness Collection
How about a type set of the Spanish Colonial 8 Reales?

Not to mix fandoms here but...
Resistance is futile. You must rejoin the Darkside.
Sun faces are awesome!
I have to admit. I do like the idea that while I'm looking at my coins, they are looking back at me.

OK, since we're talking about how and what to collect, I've come up with an approach. I'm want to put together a box of 20. I'm going to take my time and put together a collection of 20 coins all in slabs. All nice coins with good eye appeal. Once I hit 20 slabs, I'll start upgrading, rather than having the collection grow. I like the idea of having a small number of "great" coins instead of a large collection of "good" coins. I am doing that with my comic book collection and I'm happy with that approach. Of course I say that, but tonight I bought a couple of raw coins on ebay...a Mother Theresa Thaler restrike (I always wanted one) and a 1953 New Zealand Crown in proof because it was bargain priced. (So much for firm resolve!)

How about Canada, Queen Victoria? 1 cent to 50 cent starting 1858.
once you are hooked on that, you become a Vicky chaser.
Heh, I already sort of am a "Vicky Chaser". I only have a handful of dark side coins, but a few of them have Queen Victoria on them.

You know, if you think about it, Queen Elizabeth is the Queen Victoria of the modern era. Her coronation issues date back to 1953, so she's coming up on 65 years as queen. While it's true that her image is everywhere, my guess is that when she's gone, her early issues and hard to get issues will be sought after. I have half a mind to keep going with the Coronation Crowns in Proof mostly because I already bought one cheap and they are so beautiful on the back. Of course, that might defeat the purpose of my box of 20 concept if I get them in the raw. But maybe my box of 20 can be for everything else. lol! So do they make a crowns of Queen Elizabeth capital plastics holder? Here's the seller's picture of the one I just bought It looks like it might be impaired, but I don't know if there was an issue with the holder. Didn't pay much for it so I'm OK with it.
EDIT: OK, now I'm not so sure about whether it's impaired. Maybe those are hairline abrasions? I don't have a lot of experience grading proofs, but I can't find anything that definitively states hairlines are considered an impairment as long as they are light and the coin has no wear. So I was trying to find slabbed coins on ebay that looked sort of similar and found this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1962-PR64-DCAM-Franklin-Half-Dollar-PCGS-Graded-PF64-Ultra-Cameo-Proof-/182590713348?hash=item2a83412e04:g:XNEAAOSw8lpZJffp
Anyone care to guess if this would be considered impaired? Here's the back....doesn't seem molested:
