Best I can recall is "what is the coin worth out of the holder?"
Saved me a fortune by passing on top population coins at astronomical premiums.

"Those aren't scratches...those are adjustment marks!!!"
Ok...it wasn't so much wise. But I did learn something.
Plastic has both positive and negative value depending upon the grade on the holder. Seek out the negative value instances
toned coins look different when you look at them under a different light

When building a collection, quality means everything. Half a dozen really nice coins will produce a much more favorable impression than 100 so-so ones.

Don't over pay for a coin, unless you're Rainbowroosie.
Hmm....Don't accept coins shipped in condom boxes. Shipping them might be OK.

If your proof Indian head cent is not blue, then it's not original.
Always clean your rare coins with an angle grinder.

In reality, old worn coins are really much cooler than mint state coins because they actually represent history having lived it in the real world and not inside a lonely album its whole life.
You have to pay tuition to get into this hobby.
I have met quite a few collectors who continued to pay tuition, right up to the time they exited this hobby. The entire 'tuition bill', on occasion, has been paid when collectors sold their coins without doing their homework first.

Or when their heirs sell their coins. Collections require a good exit plan.
"Cash your collection into Coinstar. They only charge 6% to handle your dreck."
Well lets see.... Don't pay XF money for a coin in a VF 35 holder. Don't buy toned coins on Ebay unless you know how to tell the true color..Lastly, if a coin has a cac gold sticker and plus or star after the grade, it is probably undergraded, but... it might not be a great looking coin...
From a B&M owner:
"Save your money for the show"
....as do collectors.
When heirs sell, collectors may have already exited....
Don't take any.
(Of course, mine is more valuable because it's off-center and has a slight delamination at 12:00...)
"Third party grading is a fad. Those people don't know anything about grading coins."
"Today's flip is tomorrow's dead weight." So very true.... Once in a while, a hot item will retain value, however, most plummet to a fraction of the flip cost. Cheers, RickO
