If I see a price on something I am interested in, and it is high, I will either just move on, or, as I have on occasion, PM the seller and make an offer.... I have done that and have had the offer accepted. Once it was countered, and we agreed. When it comes to price, I keep my communications private. Cheers, RickO

Funny side story that happened about a week and a half ago. Walked into a coin shop in southern burbs of Chicago with $$$ in my pocket looking to buy a random date AGE 1oz. Lady asked if she could help me, and I told her what I was looking for. After a few minutes fumbling around a case, and then a few more minutes in the back room, she came out to apologize that they didn't have any in stock. She told me she could order one for me though, so I bit and asked for a quote. After another 5-7 minutes, she came back and said $1350! I knew that APMEX had them for just $1272 at the time, so I politely told her that I could order one from APMEX for about $75 less and that I preferred to do business with local merchants if possible. She said (in a very snooty voice) "well don't forget about shipping".....to which I quickly shot back "shipping is free with APMEX". The look on her face was simply priceless! As if someone came over and blew their nose in her blouse. And some folks wonder why the traditional brick and mortar joints are failing miserably!
So you expect to pay lower than APMEX prices at a local brick and mortar store?
Where did I ever say that I expected to pay less than APMEX? I would LOVE for you to specifically point it out to me. Thanks!
Well, you quoted the APMEX price as your negotiating tactic. If not $75, how much more were you willing to pay to order one from the store?
I would have actually paid up to $1300 to buy one on the spot.....but if the best she could do was order one for me, why would I pay a single dime more than it would cost me to order one myself and have it shipped to my mailbox?
Because a local B&M store is not going to be able to compete with a behemoth like APMEX when it comes to pricing. If you are truly willing to support a local shop, you're not going to get the same deal as you would from a huge online retailer.
You ever buy from a local coin shop? There are circumstances in which bullion can be had for much, MUCH less than what APMEX sells for in certain instances. You just need to know what you're looking at is all. Its called cherry picking.
For gold eagles? If you find a location like that, more power to you.
Ever sell a gold eagle to a local shop? What did they pay you? The industry standard around here is 98%. Now if you walk in with a few and sell them at 98%, then I walk in 10 minutes later with cash in hand, and they wont sell them to me at 105% over spot, then they didn't want to make an $85 dollar instant profit I guess. And later on that same day, I found a shop with some in stock and they were happy to match APMEX's price.
Of course you mean 5% over spot....not 105% over spot.

I guess you live in Piecesofme country where bullion sellers get SCREWED!
Around here last I knew, local local paid $10 over for AGEs and 35 miles away locals pay $15-$20 over for 1 ounce AGEs.
Please don't bring me into this! I haven't said a word in this thread and the way this discussion has gone is why I don't get involved in these kinds of threads anymore.

What this place needs is a ban pool . something like the investment contest thread , winner is whoever guesses the next banning , it would have to be hosted elsewhere though or it would probably create some sort of paradox and we might all cease to exist
Lighten up. I don't think anyone is going to drag you into it. You have previously commented about what bullion dealers in your area pay so IMO it's fair game for repeating. You weren't in it until you responded, kinda like a moth to a bug zapper.

Look...I don't appreciate one single bit being mentioned in the fashion that I was. I've done nothing to deserve that. I've INTENTIONALLY stayed away from commenting in these type of threads for close to 2 years. Contrary to what B-FAN says, it's NOT fair game because it's not a current point of view, nor is it really even on topic for what has been discussed in this thread. He should delete HIS post mentioning my name in that fashion. Completely unprofessional and I hope people are taking note of his character.

Since it bothered you so much, I edited my post but the gist is still true. Several years ago you said that dealers in your area paid about 98% of spot so if Gecko lives in your area [which I think he does] that must still be true. Also it was MY opinion that dealers who offer 98% of spot are shanking the sellers; I never said nor implied that it was your opinion.
edit again. And it's certainly relevant since Geckster mentioned local B&M dealers competing with APMEX and the only way they can do that is to buy at lower prices from walkin sellers.
People here are free to ask whatever they want to for their bullion/coins. No reason to call someone out just because you don't agree with their pricing. The worst that can happen is that it won't sell. Generally if you want your stuff to sell you need to price it competitively with sellers here or the bigger bullion places.
As far as the APMEXs et al, I buy from whoever has the best deal and terms. All things being equal, I'd buy from someone who can stand behind their shipping if something goes south. Over at the bullionstacker site, for many sellers their responsibility ends when they drop it in the mail and if an uninsurable package gets lost you're pretty much SOL. Also just because we're members here doesn't mean that we're pals, buddies, friends etc. and I don't feel that we owe each other a deal. Of course I'm more inclined to deal with those I've come to trust and who have done me a turn or 2.
Also, IMO places like APMEX are less likely to pass off fake coins than some nameless stranger posting on a message board. I expect that when they buy from random sources they test the coins to make sure that the coins are the real thing and that they're not getting shanked.

I am not a fan of Apmex and do my best to avoid them. MCM is my go to dealer if I have Ebay bucks to cash in.
I am not here to get hosed, but would pay a small premium to buy from an upstanding guy like Weiss over a metal mill like Apmex.
Exposing fakes or misidentified items is fine. Don't like the price because it is higher than Apmex, keep it to yourself.
