‘Piggy Bank,’ the beloved sea turtle who swallowed 915 coins, is dead
By Katie Mettler March 22 at 4:17 AM

A sea turtle named Omsin, Thai for “piggy bank,” rests after a surgical operation to remove coins from her stomach in Bangkok. (Athit Perawongmetha/Reuters)

The operation took many surgeons and seven hours, much longer than expected, but the team of Thai doctors who cut open then stitched back together the 130-pound green sea turtle in early March walked away convinced they had defeated death.

In a bucket beside them were 915 coins, foreign and domestic, that the 25-year-old creature had swallowed while living in a pond in a seaside town near the Gulf of Thailand. Visitors, longing for good fortune, had plied the water — and by extension the turtle — with lots and lots of money.

By the time rescuers found her nearly drowning, she had swallowed 11 pounds of it.

I'm surprised it lived that long with all those metals in its digestive system. Metal poisoning and such.

That is very sad, I hate to see innocent creatures harmed by human stupidity.

(on the other hand, how many of the recovered coins were blue-toned Indian head cents?)

Very sad.... Not sure if the coins killed the turtle of the operation... However, we would now have a new category of tarnished coins called TT - Turtle Toned....and very limited supply... Cheers, RickO

i tend to do that sometimes. however, i should point out that i do have sympathy for the animal.

but, i just could not pass up the opportunity to suggest something outrageous.
