Proof Like 1921 Peace $...

I have to say this might be a fake or is the best whizzing/polishing job of a real coin I have ever seen... I wish I could see this in hand. Someone was very detailed....

My guess would be that had a good polishing, I could see it being very convincing to someone without much knowledge though.

Oh I agree but whoever did it put some love and care into it. Except for the rays to the left of the Eagle's back, it seems like they did a very detailed job. Id love to own it just for the craftsmanship it required. It had to be hard to polish between the rays near the bottom.

Former Blue moon coins on Ebay job? They used to pedal sandblasted phony cameo proof peace dollars a few years back

"...whoever did it put some love and care into it..."

No. It's called greed and fraud that they put into it....!

There was someone on ebay a few years ago who would work on coins with an air powered abrasive unit and create PL surfaces. Some folks are very handy with these gadgets.

I dont see this as any different than any other attempt to "improve" a coin for financial gain, including dipping.

Any alteration to make a potential buyer believe that a coin is better than what it was is motivated by greed and is fraudulent.

But if the guy used a high pressure sulfur gadget and made it look like rainbows ponies and unicorns it'd be OK and fetch thousands.

I have seen a few flashy Peace dollars over the years, but nothing close to anything looking like that. I can't imagine many collectors being fooled by this one. At least I would hope not.

I'm not sure if they are still around. It seems to me they also "made" some DCAM ASE "proofs" the same way of the date the mint didn't make , 2009??

Those who know the history of Proofing and Peace Dollars know that the mint would have never made a brilliant Proof Peace Dollar like this. The only pieces that were made were Matte Proofs with a dull finish.

As for "love and care," there wasn't any. It was pure "G-R-E-E-D" intended to fool an inexperienced buyer.

Actually the Mint did make two different kinds of proofs for 1921 and NGC has certified both kinds.

(I note Bill has corrected/clarified the above quote in a subsequent post agreeing that there were both Matte Proofs and Proofs with a Satin Finish.)

The only types of Proofs according to "Coin Facts" and other sources is sand blasted with anique finish, the Matte finish and a Satin Finish Proof according to Breen. None of them were brilliant Proofs.

I thought they were called "California Proofs", it doesn't take PCGS to determine this is one of those.

"California Proofs" are minted for Morgans. Peace dollars are from Colorado or so a collector at our local coin club bragged about.

OK, I am going to say something unpopular: I like this coin for its aesthetic appearance.

That said, I have no doubt that it is "treated" and agree with the previous posts about its origins.
