The Thrill of a Deal
I quite enjoy the thrill of striking a deal. Negotiating, trading, and bartering.
I recall as a kid trading baseball cards, pogs, garbage pail kids, comics, etc.
Tomorrow I have arranged to meet, in person, one of the top registry guys for Jefferson nickels! I'm excited enough about that, but to sweeten the day, we are trading pcgs nickels (like kids with baseball cards.)
This is awesome for me, but I am trading away of the "crown jewels" of my collection, in exchange for many other coins needed to fill out my registry set.
The anticipation is overwhelming! Haha can't wait. So this brings me to the question...
Do you enjoy trading or buying only? Any stories, pointers, or experiences to share?
I've never been to a coin show or actually met another coin enthusiast outside random people at the local coin shop.

Nah, I don't enjoy haggling.
I usually have a price in mind and if it isn't met, after a polite "Can you do a little better?", I offer thanks and move along.
Lance.
With most of the trades I have worked out we usually trade based on the pcgs price guide list prices. Or close. I usually offer the better end of the deal to the other person, since I am usually the one intitiating the request to trade.
The actual negotiations are usually only over which extras they have for which extras I have. And matching pre established ask/offer prices.

You trading away your toughest dates/best coins to fill more holes? Will you be able to replace them later or are they duplicates? Anyways best of luck to ya.

Basically yes. I'm getting 2 tough varieties that I outright cannot afford otherwise, 3 upgrades, and filling 5 holes, 1 downgrade, and a few side collection pieces.
The favorite I am trading off, I have one lesser grade version and am confident I can replace the grade eventually. I like top pop coins but would rather have the quality bulk and leap past 90%

Listen to @BruceS
Corso, Overby, or Dingledein? If it's that Dingledein guy, take an extra shirt with you 'cause he'll be wearing yours when the tradin's over.
Mwahahaha! We will see. I always give credit for a coin in my sets when acquired from another registry or member here. Maybe next week there will be a new "Thank you ........." next to the new coins in my set.
Sincerely,
Giddy
PS.
Does it make me a bottom feeder to build with the leftovers of giants... or clever?

Sounds like great fun!! I hope that you enjoy and it works out for you.
I usually buy outright, these days, but early on---I used to sell stuff that I didn't want or need and then used the proceeds for something that I did.

When it came to Pogs I enjoyed just taking them from the neighborhood kids with my massive triple slammer. I couldn't be beat
As to your question. It all depends. Every situation is different.
I always attempted to make sure that the counter party was as satisfied as I was.
I have never traded coins... I just buy... Never even considered a trade... Just hate the thought of giving up any of my coins... Cheers, RickO
Looking forward to hearing how it went. If you close the deal, post a couple pics!
Yeeaaaaaaahhhhh!!!
No matter where you are on this spinning rock, you might have heard my elated joyful yelling today!
Success I think! We are both happy coming away.
We met from 9am-2pm. Talked for hours, nickels and pcgs, family, coins. It was epic. Best day I can remember in ages.
Our initial trade went smoothly and then we got to trading 90% silver for nickels and I left with 6 additional nickels for around $30 face value in halves and quarters.
I scored some epic varieties and filled several tedious/ difficult common dates. In all I think it was a smashing success for both of us. The 2 high grade nickels I traded are already forgotten in this wonderful new sea of pcgs holders!!!!
Wooooooooooooooo

You seem elated... and if your trading partner feels the same, then it was win-win all the way... Cheers, RickO
Sounds like a win-win and fun. Congrats to you both!
Awesome!
My YouTube Channel
looks like an exceptional group you have there.
No. When I buy it's to add to my collection, not to sell or especially trade. It's just not for me.
Good for you.
Great looking group you have shown there.
I'll take another gander at your set tonight when I have more time.

As long as everyone is happy....all is good.
Well in hindsight it was a great deal all around! We are both happy, and even worked out another deal.
I now have a sizable credit with this awesome fellow to pick more coins for my set.
The options are exciting and now I have to decide whether to make quality upgrades or fill spots with lower grade tough varieties.

Congratulations - there are many ways to enjoy the hobby, and you found one of them!
If you had just taken those coins to a dealer to sell, unless he was a specialist in these, you likely would have gotten very lowball offers. Doing this, you made your dollar go further, so to speak, and advanced your collection, and (it sounds like) made a great new friend in the hobby.
.
Enjoy this thread ---congrats !
I love trading! Glad it went well for you!
Sounds like it was a lot of fun! Congrats on the new pick ups.
I usually do not have to haggle, but is fun when I do
