That appears to be a vintage cast lead counterfeit, made for the purpose of spending at face value.

It is beat to hell but I still see the mark from Liberty's sandal. Also near the L in liberty it seems to have the obverse of an SLQ. It looks like it was struck more than once, too.

A neat item for free.
A very crude fake and I can't see how anyone can see a SLQ in there nor how that would be possible.
I wonder what material was used to make the impression since it's so much cruder than what you would get with

Hahaha well the guy I bought a couple other barber dimes and Indian heads gave it to me free
Brian k.
There are probably forum members that would pay up for a piece like this. Not much, but something I bet.
It should have been free... Cheers, RickO
Looks counterfeit, but I must admit that I have no clue how you came up with the title to the thread.
In honor of the memory of Cpl. Michael E. Thompson
Great photos, BTW - and I agree with TomB - what made you think it was struck over an SLQ?
.
All I can say is I'm a rookie at this and great fully appreciate your guys help
Brian k.
That's why
Brian k.
Walking liberty, there is a lot of details behind the strike from the mint looks like a o or d. There was a SLQ on there before mr. Washington. Zoom in on the pictures I have a very good camera and if u can edit the picture changing the brightness and contrast brings out those details even more
Brian k.
I know the thing is beat to smithereens But if u got a bronze 1943 penny that was beat all to hell would you throw it out ur window?
Brian k.
I see that too. Two rows of stars on Washington's neckline and also what looks to be a mirror image of a Washington quarter die cap
Brian k.
Wow... I cannot see anything such as you describe.... Cheers, RickO
Cool
Brian k.
I cant't see the 2 rows of stars and I am really looking hard.
I am pretty sure that it is a crude fake. The details are just way off. I can not recall ever seeing die cracks that large on a washington quarter either. Have you had it tested to see if it is even silver or not?
Haven't tested it but will do a specific gravity tonight, I'm at work
Brian k.
They're not die cracks, which would be raised on the coin.
I too believe it's a lead counterfeit.

Lamination peel. If it was lead I would know it.
Brian k.
It's not a lamination or
laminated planchet.
That's a crack in the 'planchet'.

"A stupid moron". Post of the Day.
If it is lead that would mean that it is a experimental strike metal as i was reading about this experimental die trial

This is from the us mint site

You posted here, asking for help. Some of the top experts in the hobby weighed in and told you what you have, and you're disputing what they're telling you. Why did you bother to post in the first place?
Hey there friend all I asked for is help there is no reason to be all assholeset ok. I bet every one of you when u got ur first coin like this knew exactly what It was along with the proper definitions for every type of error or counterfeit or whatever. I just ask for help and I get a buncha rude jackassy responses well most of em is this hat you do to all people that ask for help as a beginer. Tells me a lot about the coin collectors club and the pcgs.
yet another post from a newcomer who is Numismatically ignorant, asks for assistance and doesn't get the answers he hoped for so chooses to battle. next, please.
newcomers need how to learn how to introduce themselves and enter the room with grace.
Did you ever do this? Did you ever weigh the coin?
I'm going to apply Hanlon's Razor: "Never attribute to malice that which can be explained by ignorance" (in some definitions, s/ignorance/stupidity/g)
To the OP, what you are seeing is being translated by your brain trying to make patterns out of noise. The term is pareidolia (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/pareidolia),

Is this another "chicken joke".......wait a minute.....wrong show....sorry.
You forumists have it all wrong. The coin in this post was inadvertently brought back from the Bizzaro World by Superman.
It was one of 5 struck in lead in secret by Bizzaro Mint officials. It has been missing for years.
It is one of the rarest coins in the Bizzaro numismatic world, and they would like it back.
Have Superman return it and you will be remembered forever............................................
Pete
I have the other 4....what are they worth??
Looks like a lead fake to me.
Probably contemporary, when a quarter was worth faking.
On us patterns site they specifically said lead was used for some patterns. Just saying I'll do some research but yea dimeman ur right and superman brought it to my house but Santa Claude brought it into the door
Brian k.
And ur probably right it is probably a fake but what if I'm right?
Brian k.
If you're right, you're rich.
If you find the comments here and/or weighing the thing non-definitive, send it in to PCGS for verification.
Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...
Some of the recent posts have premature aging qualities
hey friends i mean no disrespect, i realize you guys have a lot more experience in this than me but there are articles on the mike beyers mint errors site that talk about coins being struck in plastic and all sorts of wierd sruff. done on purpose or not it would be unique and valuable, and your right i came here asking your help from the exzperts..... you guys and maybe i am a ignorant new numiosmatic but the posts ive gotten from you guys really make a bad name for us and i mean really why would you talk shat like that to someone asking for help what the heck! i mean you gotta be a special kind of ass to ridicule someone asking for help and offering sugetions other than the ole its been buried in the ground for 50 years, which is def. the more probable answer, but cut me some slack.
Brian k.
and i dont know the rules of this site yet as far as creating a thread, shoot before this site i didnt even rea;;y know what a forum was. ok lets just say its a stupid question, what if a 5 year old asked it would you tell him he is dumb? consider me the 5 year old to the numismatic world i probably know about 7% of the thing most of you do and sorry if i offended any of you i mean no harm.
Brian k.
Mr. Weinberg, who responded to this thread is one of the leading if not the best error specialist in the business. He is a PCGS grader of errors and such. If he says it is not the real deal you can bank on that. His 50 years or so of experience in this field of coins trumps yours. ((mine too)).

Did you ever do this or weigh the coin?
Screeb741: I apologize for the Superman humor, but I did so out of frustration. I know you're new here, but the expert advice you were given didn't seem to help.
Don't abandon this Forum. If you're serious about coins this is the best place to be.
Pete
And everyone has had to grow thicker skin, because when one hears what they DON'T want to hear, ESPECIALLY when an EXPERT in that particular field chimes in, you just have to chalk it up to experience and move on to the next one. Just because you don't get the opinions you WANT, that's NO reason to go off like you did. I'd edit the posts you use 'foul language' in, that's IF you want to stick around.
Is it just me, or does the new group of newbies seem to 'buy buy buy', with nothing but reselling in mind, without doing any research prior to purchasing, and really take offense when they get the opinions they ask for? Too many seem to be following this 'no research, I know what I have, but I'll just verify it with those who know more than I do', and when the hammer falls, they take offense??? They are making this forum unbearable......too many as of late.
This new group thinks they can make a fortune reselling without ANY research....what's up with this epidemic?? just a good thing this piece was 'free' (though, I do have my doubts about it being 'free' given the harsh language the OP uses to those he's asking help from. A VERY good way to be left out in the cold when asking future advice/help.
