Goldberg auction last night...5 second lag...very annoying.

oih82w8oih82w8 Posts: 12,712 ✭✭✭✭✭

I had a few bids on some of the Large Coppers yesterday for the Goldberg auctions, Long Beach. When I tuned in to the live event there was an announcement, after their lunch break, that there was a five second delay between the auctioneer and the displayed auction results. It was very annoying, but I finally had to tune out (mute) the audio and keep an eye on the live results. There were some pretty big fish in the pond yesterday and I was left with my slush fund intact.

I tuned in as well (purely for fun, those coins are out of my league) and I was REALLY impressed by the results. There was one coin with an estimate of 45K that sold for 165K. The auction just kept going and going and going and the bids kept pouring in. The auctioneer didn't even seem surprised, she just nonchalantly taken bids.

The lag was annoying, you had to either watch the video OR look at the messages, you couldn't do both, as they were completely out of sync.

@oih82w8 ... an intact slush fund is not a bad thing....A major find could occur now, and you would have the funds..... :) Always look on the bright side... ;) Cheers, RickO

I made a stab at several Large Cents and then sat stunned while the prices ran up to double my max bids.

Then I stuck it out on a couple and hopefully they will be as nice as the pics seem to look.

I'm eyeing some pieces.. I was surprised when some books w/notes went for 20 & 25k each. Even the old auction catalogs went for a lot.

What did the 1793 Chain AMERI. in PCGS F-15, CAC bring?

Thank you. I really like the coin from the pictures, but figured it go for a strong premium. Another attration was that it once belonged to Jules Reiver who went to college at the University of Delaware at the same time as my mother.

The way the auction was done seemed weird. I logged into it before it began and there were no bids showing on the lots, and I couldn't find a way to bid on-line. Did this auction really come down with bids that were only executed at the time of the sale?

Here is the S-1 Ameri. from Goldberg's Koshkarian collection sale Sunday. PCGS graded F-15:

Rays...Thanks for the auction picture .Your VF 25 is superior.

Both the striking characteristics and the hair detail engraved in the dies of the S-1 Ameri, and S-4 Periods chains are different. I haven't seen the Koshkarian S-1 in person but I would think it has more sharpness, but the surfaces and color are slightly less smooth than my S-1 pictured below. Koshkarian's S-1 was described by Grellman (cataloger for Goldberg) as:
Mostly glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. No spots or stains, only microscopic contact marks.

My S-1 is very light in color and smooth (no hint of porosity) and has a few handling marks, the photo kind of accentuates them. The date 1793 is a little weak on many ameri's; the chain is usually bold even on Good examples.

When I was shopping for Chain Cents for the type, I noted that Sheldon numbers 1 through 3 looked "crude" while the S-4 looked "civilized." It has been suggested that Joseph Wright may have made the dies for the Periods Variety. I would have preferred one of the first three varieties, but my budget and availability led me to an S-4.
