Exceptional piece of Charlotte gold

I noticed this on the Legend website. I am just amazed at the state of preservation of this 1853-C half eagle. Does anyone know anything about the history of this piece?

    Thanks for sharing. Makes me appreciate having held onto one of the first gold pieces I purchased which just happened to come from one of the Southern mints. I didn't appreciate back then how rare quality gold from those mints actually is since PCGS and NGC were just coming of age.

    This piece is indeed special! It as noted came from the 1978 Stacks Bareford sale as lot 173. The sale featured some very memorable high end half eagles. I have the catalog back in the US but don't have access to it. The Bass II catalog I do have and it notes it was previous to that it was in the Kosoff March 1948 "A Memorable Collection... which was J.F. Bell". Funny in the Bass II catalog, they made an error in the description for this coin citing it in both Bell and "Memorable" for the same date and lot # when in actuality they are the same sale.

    J.F.Bell was a pseudonym; his real name was Jacob F. Shapiro. He assembled important collections, emphasizing U.S. and pioneer gold coins. They were mostly sold in the 1940's. Stack's sold much of his collection in 1944. and that catalog is still considered moderately important.

    the coin's condition speaks for itself. it's about as good as you can hope for, from the charlotte mint, esp. sharp strike, original skin, no distracting marks, beautiful color, and provenance.

    i would say that if:

    • the price is right
    • you can afford it
    • you have a place for it in your collection

    pull the trigger!

    It looks like Legend sold it at Auction for $64,625 a couple years ago. The price seems a bit high considering they definitely paid less than that for the coin. Don't get me wrong, I'd buy it if I wasn't tied up in so many other pieces and the price was right.

    It's definitely a nice coin for Charlotte product, but $75K is awfully strong.

    "Try dressage horses." Yep... Horses are expensive... I had Arabians for years.... they are definitely costly...

    I totally get the rarity of this issue, especially in this high grade, but do you agree with the following (I certainly don't).....

    While it was one of the first pieces of gold I acquired I can't say I have an emotional attachment to it just for that reason - so yes, I could see letting it go.
