Is this chopped trade dollar genuine?
I'm having trouble with this one. The reverse is chopped away which can affect the obverse details, but something about the date looks a little off to me (there are no chops directly across the 878). Additionally, the coin is coming in at 27.0g (+/-.02 on a few weighings), which is light even with some wear, and I'm not sure if chops or something else would be a good explanation for the low weight. Does it matter?
It was sent to me to be sold, so in that regard, yes. It's a cool piece regardless.
Jeremy, can you post a nice sharp photo of the edge reeding, maybe made inside a flashlight reflector? That would be definitive. TDN: ROFL
1878-s looks real to me.
The chops are real- those haven't been faked. As far as the coin goes, it just doesn't matter
.
phew.
maybe get an xrf of it. specific grav. perhaps. does it ring ok? not sure how much the chops affect that.
the chops/damage could possibly be the reason for weight variance. if metal was obviously removed during its rough life/chops. 3 +/- grams sounds doable.
i can't attest to authenticity. that is a tough one. nothing screams fake though, from my experience.
.
No flashlight handy, but here's part of the edge.
To me it doesn't look real but it's so bad I don't think i matters much.
Looking at the edge and the dentils and allowing for the beater status I think it's real. While I'm no expert on chopmarks, they look ok to me too.
Fake chops are almost always light and small. These are real
I'm not seeing any pictures - strange.....have I been banned??
It appears authentic to me... especially the chops.... While that may not be the 'most' chopped TD I have seen.. it surely is close.... Is it going on ebay? Cheers, RickO
If you can read this response post, Lakesammman, then yes, you have been banned. Sorry.

My gut feeling is genuine, but I could never swear to it.
I have nothing to offer. I will say that is one "HAMMERED" coin
The chops look real to me.

To me the one thing that says this coin is genuine is the reeding. That 's be best looking part of this coin, which is a mess. Like CaptHenway, I'd say it's genuine, but I would not swear to it either.
Why is the obverse rim so messed up? especially down below the date - are those die breaks or PMD?
Death by a thousand chops.
rough objects the was coin sitting on when struck. perhaps even a rock/block. not joking.

I'm in the 'genuine' camp......

Experts correct me if I am wrong, but chop marks should not lessen the weight of a coin ?

Genuine with slight salt water damage (along with the chops). Cool coin and one I'll watch out for in your auctions!

Chops were so the banker could identify the coin, correct? So what's the point in blasting a chop into the center of a coin like this, if nobody could read it afterward? Just for fun I guess.
