Which would you buy?

Assumptions:

1) the price is equal, or nearly so.
2) you had the funds.
3) you want the coin.
4) there is no reasonable expectation that a nicer one will come along in 10 years.

Coin A: NGC XF details, holed, scratched.

Coin B: NGC VF35.

    Coin B

Coin B is under graded by comparison. Some wear attribution appears to be worn dies. IMHO

Tough call, coin B looks like it may be ED. Assuming that isn't the case I'd go with B

Tough call. I chose B, but only because I am thinking of potential transfer opportunities in the future. However, if my purpose was to display clarity of design, I would go with A.

If B is as unwholesome as it looks in the image, I'd go with A.

It is and I did, but I really like to hear people's rationale.

    Most collectors despise a hole.

Gilboy has the variety without assayer and value as R5. At this end of the rarity spectrum I say Coin A -- the hole is a distraction but otherwise the visual appeal is superior. Coin B looks like it might have environmental damage.

    Coin A

Coin B looks like it may not belong in a straight graded holder. In this particular case I would go with A.

Not to be a pain... Not voting as the images may not capture the essence of either coin.

They are both auction company images, so I would hope they both show their respective coins in the best light.

Went with B. Like already stated, despise holes.

And that might be part of my concern... The best light might not adequately capture the coins in the terms I would feel comfortable making a decision or even rendering an opinion. Both coins have viable arguments.

I am not a set builder per se so I would pass on both.
My goal is to own a group of coins that all make me happy when I hold them. Having a complete set of any series is not important to me.

    B, couldn't accept the hole.

Doesn't the answer sort of depend on what the coin is for? If for a low-grade set, then B. But if for a higher grade set, then A. Remember that the hole in A can be filled and the details expertly repaired.

Well, yes, I didn't list every possible assumption.

I think it's interesting to hear people's opinion based on their collecting experiences.

While I like coin A, I would never consider filling the hole. I consider that doctoring.

BTW, those are the two finest specimens of the type (1732-Mo 1/2 R without assayer) that I know of.
