January Pickups. Start off 2017 by sharing the new arrivals!

The pricing correction is affecting nearly every part of the hobby and now even Star basketball which had been holding up well. Prices have dropped sharply the past couple months following the lead of the 86 Fleer Jordan. I wasn't expecting to get this Star Jordan #101 rookie but the price was too good to pass on.

This 5x7 beauty is tough to find Mint with only 38 cards ever given a BGS 9, nine BGS 9.5s and no 10s

Love the Star cards! You can never go wrong with his XRC.

It looks like an old jersey. If so, is the whole thing in tact?

  • Amazing Star cards, Sushi. Great pickups.

Oh wow - Up close it looked to be the inside collar of an old jersey. Cool picture. To bad for the big stain! Great Auto!

    Thanks.
Though, the stain made it very affordable and perfect for the custom cut it will become.

JR Cool story. Absolutely amazing how good those cards look for nearly 130 years old!

Hi. My name is Kevin and I am an addict. For those of you that recall last fall I acquired 4/5 (3 Topps & 1OPC) of the 1976 French Connection cards that were graded PSA 10. Always on the hunt for the 5th as I was flipping through the bay a few weeks ago I saw a 1976 Topps in PSA 10! My heart was racing and I clicked on it only to notice that the listing was from 4sharp and they had it listed as a Pop 4. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh the disappointment. So a few days go by and I cant get it out of my head. Like I said before the Pop increasing sort of made me lose a little bit of excitement in the chase. Well the addict in me won out. Here is what is now 4 of 5 1976 Topps #214 French Connection cards in PSA10. The chase is still on for the last one but if the Pop goes up again Im out. I think.... Probably.....
    .

    .
Also picked up a few of each of these guys to send off for submission. Safety in numbers.
    .

    .
Finally a 1986 OPC Gilbert Perreault in PSA 10 which is an upgrade for my Perreault registries.
    .

    Kevin

  • I love how the colors just pop on that 1986. Great card!

Great stuff. Those Allen and Ginter's are beautiful.

Nice pickup on the Yaz and the Robinson AS.

Cornering the market on French Connection 10s is a very cool collecting goal.

The 1970 set is very special to me because of my late uncle. Picked this card up. Once 1 higher, owned by another Yaz master list member, Jason. Happy to add this one to my collection...

I've been looking for this for quite a while. A flawless 1982 factory set. Cards and box are perfect.

Was very excited to get this one. Love the '55 Bowman set and am slowly trying to get the HOFers. Blurry image is my scanner not the card.

Great pickups guys, well except for Stan Pounder. By the looks of it, she will be the one picking you up!

I finally picked up a Bryant Rookie Auto. It is a black refractor numbered /99. I will be sending it to PSA, looks like it will be 8.5-9. Fingers crossed!

Arsenal83 Congrats on crossing off one of youre signature WTB items. Always cool to complete the journey.

UFFDAH Beautiful Wilt! I'm not a Basketball guy but he may be one of the first who transcended the sport into cultural icon territory. At least to me. If that's blasphemous to anyone due to a glaring omission excuse my basketball ignorance.

A few pickups made their way into the collection this week. First up is a 1976 Topps Rick Martin with Auto. I decided to snag this for a few reasons. First as a member of the French Connection this is the same year as the Connection cards I've posted here earlier and it inspired me to try and track down a 1976 card with auto For Perreault & Martin as well to display. Also I'm not sure how many of this year are signed and in great shape with decent centering like this one and since he is deceased the count wont increase. When I first saw the listing for it I though maybe it was trimmed but it measures perfect maybe even a hair over on the length. I does have a small surface issue between the "E" and "S" in Sabres where the black meets white. If the small raised spot gets noticed what is the best I could expect to get when I sub it? With out it getting noticed I would say 8.5 maybe 9. I at least want the auto verified but might get it graded as well if I wouldn't be starting to low because of the raised spot.

Next up a little more Eichel. Im going to send in two to Leaf for signatures and 2 unsigned for grading in a week or two.

UFFDAH - Wow incredible Wilt, congrats on a great pickup.

LOTSOS - I'm loving your hockey pickups. I really need to get one of the Mcdavid and Eichel RC's for my collection soon.

I went to visit my parents at my childhood home over the holidays and picked up much of my sports card collection. I found so many awesome gems I totally forgot about. So, in a way, this was a new pickup since I didn't remember I had it. lol

Wow!!! The color on that Wilt is incredible. Awesome looking Card. Congrats UFFDAH!!!

Some incredible pickups and we are only halfway through the month. So many great cards I can't comment on them all, so congrats to all and thanks for sharing. I'll be adding some pickups to the thread when I get to the computer.

As a basketball guy, I have to comment on the Wilt PSA 9. UFFDAH, that card is an absolute mic drop! Congratulations!

As promised, here are three cards that arrived in January but were technically purchased in December. The two Star Jordan cards are for my set. I have a completed set now with 8/10 as BGS 9.5. The card #9 is the lowest pop BGS 9.5 of the set at a pop 10. I have been looking for a nice Magic Bird RC with good card and perforation centering and no black line. I am happy with this one!

  • Gorgeous cards, Steve. I've been trying to upgrade my Star stash, but between you and Sushi, it has not been easy. I picked up a few cards so far.

Thanks bro. I still have about 20 or so 1968's to finally finish that set. I've been working on that since I was 18 (I'm 37 now).

Thanks for the props on my Wilt. Much appreciated!

Slum - the Bird/Johnson Rookie is real nice with attractive centering even at the perforations. Congrats!!

Arsenal - that Fisk / Cooper Rookie is an eye catcher for sure - congrats!! Would be curious to know what that grades if you send off.

  • KendallCatKendallCat Posts: 3,009 ✭✭✭✭✭

That Fisk/Cooper card is a monster - nice pickup!

  • Finally managed to snatch up a couple of my all time favorites!!!

Thank you. You guys have any guesses on what the Clemente and Fisk would grade?

  • LOTSOSLOTSOS Posts: 1,308 ✭✭✭✭✭

SlugSports. Love that Horsemen card! While I'm by no means a Domer Homer I always held a soft spot in my Heart for the Irish. Visited during a youth hockey tournament that was held on campus. That was the first time I ever set foot on a college campus and it made quite the impression.

    Congrats

Arsenal83 , The lower left corner of the Clemente probably keeps it from being an 8. I would say PSA 7-7.5. Regardless of grade a nice looking card. The Fisk rookie looks pretty strong with the corners. Hard to know based on the small picture but a solid PSA 8 for sure with a shot at PSA 8.5 - 9. If you get them graded let us know the results.

SlugSports, those AA cards look great. The more I see them the more I want to start collecting them. Congrats on landing two great looking cards.

  • KendallCatKendallCat Posts: 3,009 ✭✭✭✭✭

Agree on the Clemente and lower left corner but still a 7/7.5. Cooper/Fisk card should be an 8/8.5 or higher.
