One of the coolest things I own

Four of the first five trade dollars ever minted. Each has the number hand scratched above the eagle (2,3,4,5)

You need a special holder made for those.
I agree. They've just been sitting in the same mailing box for almost 20 years since I bought them
I surprised they didn't get PVC damage.
These are very special, and cool, pieces if history.

Tremendous. As to the special holder, it actually looks like number 4 might have some nice toning, maybe from the packaging it has been in. Great stuff.

Too cool.
Thanks or sharing.
Absolutely incredible that they would not only be kept with the provenance, but that the set has not been broken up. An incredible set for the Trade Dollar collector.
ok. that's pretty amazing.
Wow. Incredibly cool and thanks for posting them!
Freakin awesome...!
Love the letter and the coins! The numbers on the back are wonderful!
TDN, Thanks for sharing as it's incredible that the 4 dollars remained together.
I released a group of 7 copper & silver tokens still in those Bower Merena holders since mid 1980 (84-86) last winter so I could photograph them. None of them had any PVC issues and since they where nearly vacuumed sealed the surface conditions still matched the auction catalog descriptions.
That is just flat out cool!
They look great after 20 yrs.' wouldn't disturb them now...Great post:)
Good grief! Just to imagine these coins still being together after 130 some odd years, is nearly unimaginable. Such a piece of numismatic history to behold, thank you so much for sharing these pics with us. It must be a wonderful feeling to be able to hold these and view them and thinking of all the Americans that have done the same. Congrats.

Living vicariously through you people's possessions.
On another note (aside from the graffiti, i.e., scratches) wouldn't there be PVC residues or worse, with 20 years of storage in a soft-flip ?
