Can't always get what you want

Some debate whether the first 2 year type of 1838+39 $10 Gold with hair over the ear, different neckline, and tilt of the bust should be considered a significant and separate variety for a type set.
I do and Coinfacts labels it as Type 1 with T2 being no motto and T3 w/motto but then finding a pleasant example in high grade is the hard part.

With a mintage of just 7200 the first year can be found in VF-XF and very rare above that but the issue is notorious for bag marks and most are hacked up. With a very small population of AU and Unc coins I had to make some concessions a decade or so ago and what came available was a nice but previously dipped coin without the heavy marks in an early NGC holder.

I was lucky to get mine as a year later the Bass AU58 came up for auction ( a very nice lustrous and superior coin) but I would not be able to compete with those who really wanted it and prices have escalated ever since.

The 1830's produced an unusually high number of design changes that can be collected as separate types. Each collector needs to make his own decision on which are important enough to merit adding to their set. An interesting exhibit could be made from such material.

    All glory is fleeting.

That is a great coin. I would take one with less than original surfaces over one that is
    beat up.
I tend to look for both original surfaces and mark free but sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

Very nice example of a very tough type.

Come on now. Someone has to say it. "But if you try sometime, you get what you need."

In this case you did. Nice looking coin even if it is gold rather than an attractive metal like silver.

Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

It is a very different type coin. The were very much used and abused. That one looks nice.
