Good... slow but good.
The older I get the stranger things seem to unfold in terms of evaluations and what seems to defy common sense. I am still amazed that condition rarity for what is considered a common coin seems to trump rarity in terms of obsolete rarity by a measurement of actual surviving population. While this does not directly impact what I am seriously collecting, neverthelesss, I am still surprised at the difference in what some collectors are willing to pay for certain coins. I suppose that difference in collecting approaches makes this hobby the hobby that it has become... For better or worse.
Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
I seemed to have a turn-about year in numismatics.
For ages, or so it seems, I was collecting to fill albums.
I seemed to hit a wall in this collecting strategy, so began to pull the nicer coins out of the albums and send them in for grades/certification. This has moved me into a "buy slabbed" state of mind and really slowed down my expansion.
Not a bad thing, but a different mind set all together.
Wow - looks like Daniel had a very good year!
Year started out with a bang with the sample displays at the FUN show and Feb. Long Beach shows. PCGS did a great job displaying them and helping organize the event.
Great time meeting with other collectors and some dealers at FUN/ANA shows. Slowed down towards the end of the year, over all a net seller for 2016.
A very good year... not so much in quantity, but in acquisitions that pleased me.... some nice coins, some nice additions to my stack..... Cheers, RickO
2016 has been a banner year for me as far as unattributed varieties goes. Most have been sold to other collectors but a few remain. The latest being a 1887-S 10C F-119 in a PCGS holder...images pending.

I had a great year......finished my Walker short set with a 66 plus (1946), two 67s (1941 & 1942) and a 66 STAR (1945 D) and also found a delightful 1944 D in an old NGC #7 MS 66 slab.....upgraded my Walker one per date set, got all the Philly and Denver coins needed for my middle date set and am now 89% done with my Walker full set.

Transitioned quite a bit this year towards Spanish Colonials. Probably neutral in terms of buy/sell.
Latin American Collection
Great year. I found my first discovery VAM early in the year and set an arbitrary goal I didn't really think I'd reach of 10 VAM DC's by years end but accomplished that feat a few weeks ago just in the nick of time! Also made some great friends that are at the tops of their respective fields in numismatics.
Perhaps the best year I have ever had collecting.
Good year really...sold a few things here and there but did not add a lot either. Starting to focus a little bit more on finishing sets and moving up in quality as the budget allows. Been fun overall.

what the Coinkat said.
Started really slow, but was able to make 3 solid additions to my early US type set later in the year...

a couple of coins were added to my collection

Slow and strange coin year for me, my favorite among my very few purchases was this B-6 quarter
Now, with 9 of the 10 different 1806 quarter marriages, one small step closer to completion of a set of early quarters by die variety
Liberty: Parent of Science & Industry
Wow, did you get ripped on that one! That's not even close to RD!!!
Overall I had a great year myself, added many a toner or a hole filler. Patience is the key.

Bought from the mint and joe public, again. Like last year and previous years. I meet more sellers than buyers.

As far as coins go I had a fairly good year. Paper money was very disappointing. For the first time since 1969 I have not bought a single note ( Yeah, my want list is very tough ) for my collection.
A good year for me. Sold a quite a bit more than I bought. Was able to upgrade several pieces. A few more big holes to fill.
This is the prettiest one I bought this year.
Pretty damn good, found a few whales in the wild.
Coin wise, meaning in collecting, certainly not the norm. The only purchases I really made this year was a Cherrypick. Two very interesting Cherrys. The Proof Lincoln " Close Am" and the famous " Superbird" Quarter! What really made the year special for me was the fact that I was able to focus more on my Father's gift to me. My avatar, my "Dad's Dollar" that he personally engraved when I was born. (The story told many times here) By PCGS changing it's format on the new forum, it enabled me to post more pics and esp. my Dad's Dollar. Thanks again PCGS -joey

Generally good here. Bought too much "stuff". But was able to stash away a couple Roosies for my slabbed set. Met my selling goals. Most importantly, worked on building relationships with local dealers and collectors.
seemed a bit slower than usual, though I did note I upgraded/replaced six coins in my Registry Set
I acquired more specimens for my Half Dime set (including varieties) than I ever expected I would. I'm just a few pieces away from completing that and Capped Busts. I'm glad that soon my focus will shift toward the Draped Bust pieces.
Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
Year was good for me if spending too much is good
Here are some 2016 newps:
2016 really was a great year
I finally bought a HR.

Finished this set(although always looking for plus's!

I only purchased a single coin during all of 2016. It was a significant target coin so I'm happy.
Flat year. Mint stuff, mostly. A few nifty items at FUN in January (some ancients, and a nice 1915 Indian Head from Legend:
Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...
For all you 2 cent lovers (I know there's not many) I picked up a open three '73 in pr 64 at the central states show.
I just need to upgrade a few coins to make me happy.
Major purchase!
There are some really fantastic coins in this thread! 2016 was a sluggish year for me collecting wise but it is good to see so many great coins picked up by board members.
I started back into collecting this year... just a Dansco 7070, but I figured I have to start somewhere. I'll post pics later... 1905 IHC, 1838 LC, 1864 2C, 1831 CBH. All purchases from Baltimore Whitman shows.

When you cherrypick like you do it's always good. I'm envious.
I love the 41 s.
A few that I couldn't pass on... 2016 was a pretty good year.

'dude
The 1941-S has some great toning in addition to being well struck up......very nice!
And you just gotta love early draped bust and old Southern gold!

2016 has been a good year for me. I added fewer coins than in 2014 or 2015, but my coin knowledge has increased and so my patience has grown as well. I started back in the hobby in 2012 after nearly 25 years away, found these boards a few months later. Just wanted to say thank you to everyone that has helped me learn a lot in a short time. There are some great members here and your educational posts and photos are truly appreciated.
Dude. Love the color and surfaces of that 1810!
"Got a flaming heart, can't get my fill"
WHY did I ever open this thread?
I kinda....well...er... went ...um... goofy this year.
So, without further ado.... (adieu?)
Was that all?
Well.... u m.... no......
Are those white coats I see?
The one piece I did buy for my collection (a Morgan toner) was lost in the mail. Everything else I purchased was inconsequential and was basically purchased to flip. For my personal collection, the year has been very dry. Some of that may be due to my pessimism of the market.
.
learned a lot. traveled safe with only 1 interstate rear flat. back up and running in 10 min +/-. thank God. lost 1 tensioner springpulley wheel which caused all sorts of probs but was an easy and cheap fix thanks to a old fellow giving me a jump to make it to my usual mechanic. ive since stopped to aid other travelers in need.
a lil kindness can save a world of pain and suffering. "Share the joy and its multiplied by two. Share the grief and its halved by two."
my favorite were the hundreds of cuds i bought and sold most of which were in 3 groups, from the same hoard!, that i have been buying from for years and only found out this fact, this year. at the tail end of the group. held a proof jefferson cud still in the mint set plastic that sold for a bit over four figures. what a neat error.
nice coins
For me, 2016 was actually pretty darn good, but lately a few different life events are really cutting into the coin budget. My best pickups are really pretty cool, but I'm still haunted by a one particular coin that "got away." The sting is still there. Probably I should have bid higher. I'm sure the consignor would think so. Live and learn.
Here's a few of the ones I have photos for:
