Help a Darksider out...what do I tell my husband about this one?

My husband is in the process of switching his SDB from one bank to another and brought home a box of coins he was keeping. Now, my husband is NOT a coin collector and I barely knew he had any. Turns out it was a small box of treasures from his grandfather and not surprisingly was a small amount of VF to AU Morgans/Peace dollars, a couple commems of varying quality but not super, a well abused 3 cent, a fake CA gold (at least I'm pretty sure it's fake) and...a couple of trade dollars.
One was an AU looking 1877. But this one caught my eye...methinks the DH has been holding out on me. My photography and lighting skills have not yet gotten to the point where I can really show off the flashy fields and it looks like there was a wipe a long time ago which is unfortunate. Still, this was NOT what I was expecting to find.
Should I tell him to get it slabbed? Or, leave it in an airtite until one of the offspring inherits it and sells it for melt? Well, hopefully I have them well trained enough not to do THAT, but is a presumably wiped proof 'worth' a slabbing fee? I did give him an airtite after all

Wow! For sure have it graded! Probably garner a Proof 55 + or - a notch if they don't nail it for the old cleaning.

Looks like a 61 at most due to cleaning and rub on the high points. I should keep it as is and save the grading fees. As you can see, a member here thinks it is a 65+. You need to find someone like that who has the money to buy it! You'll come out way ahead.
Well...we have a member here who thinks it's a 55+.
55 is less than 61.

I AGREE with you. I was trying to be charitable. The coin is a dog but a rare one at that and someone will not know the difference or wants an example of that date.
Why do you think that coin is a dog? It seems a long way from that to me.
Tell him his box is worth the $50 you'll give him, unless the gold is real, then $150.

just so you know, the only trade dollars made during this year were proof only issues. so, they are low mintage of just under 2,000.
Well, the slabbing sounds like a good idea. I was totally blown away when I realized what it was. Being a good wife (yep, want to stay married even after 20+ years
) I let him know it's a pretty cool coin. A slab will help keep the heirs from being foolish--though they should know better even though they aren't interested. I doubt my husband would sell it (it was from his grandfather) but the kids may want to someday.

That is one heck of a find, especially when some vf-au morgans and a beat up 3 cent piece are the first things you see. Good luck with slabbing it, its too scarce of a coin not to.
Well, it was more like a little box inside his SDB. He wanted to know if any of the coins were worth taking up space as he was changing banks. Goober.

Yep... I would get it slabbed... it will prevent further wear (rubbing against other coins etc.)...Nice find... One of those 'little treasures' that we all seek... Cheers, RickO
Completely unfair it belongs to the husband. I'm the one who likes this kind of treasure!
I think he's convinced on the slabbing aspect now. He's used to them (he's my slabcracker and sees my mail...) and liked the idea of minimizing the likelihood one of our kids sells it stupidly. And, ensuring it's genuine so things get split up 'fairly', whenever that happens.
At the very least it's in an appropriately sized airtite now and he knows to not clean any coin or medal. Whatever wipe it got is very old looking at least.

I've seen several folks' boxes bequeathed from grandfathers. It's always fun to look through them with people, to see if there's an exciting rarity or gem in there. Sadly for me, most of the stuff has been baggies of old common-date indian head cents, worn buff nickels and early-1960s hoarded silver. That coin is just too cool! Very smart of you to let the good people here take a look and offer knowledgeable advice.

I'm glad no one is screaming 'FAKE'. I rarely look at these so have little feel for them and I can't find my digital scale (it's good to .01 grams) to double check it.
Well, the decision now is whether to bite the bullet and finally pay for collector membership or just send ATS where I can already submit. I'm leaning towards PCGS for this one. I'd send it to someone to piggy back a submission, but eh, why not just get my own membership. After paying all the extra shipping involved to get it to someone it's not that much more to just do the membership (my only local coin shop on the dealer list is not somewhere I'd drop this off).
Really, how can a spouse be so full of surprises after 20 years??!!! He suffers my collecting and it's no secret, so you'd THINK he would have shown this to me before...

Great question! Let's consider its surfaces. Ever hear of EYE APPEAL? Apparently, my sense of it differs from yours but that's OK.
Try this approach. Let's assume you agree with the grade of AU. Is the coin an AU Typical (50) or an AU Choice (58). For a better explanation than that, you can look at a coin grading guide.
I think it will come back in a genuine/cleaned slab, but it will still be worth quite a bit although I don't know many people looking to buy cleaned coins. Maybe they will give it a 55.
