Genuine Crossovers

Have you had a TPG return a genuine grade (either PCGS or NGC) and then submit it to the other TPG and get it in a problem free holder?

This one went from ANACS MS62 to PCGS Genuine after cracking it out.

I would never waste money doing that. I can't imagine that ever working. Break them out and get a grade.....yes..done that.
An early lesson when I started collecting slabbed coins: I bought a Connecticut commem in an NGC 64 slab. For reasons I don't even remember now, I wanted it in PCGS, so I cracked it and sent it in. It came back Genuine - Cleaned. OK, I cracked it and sent it back to NGC. It came back Genuine there, too!
I still don't see any signs of cleaning or any other problems. But no way I'm paying any more submission fees for it!
Oh, by the way, here it is. (Yeah, I even paid for the TruView.)

Looks good to me...ProfLiz!

That's almost exactly my story to a tee.
Bought a PCGS MS64 $10 Lib that was too clean to pass up. Paid a 20% premium for a potential 50-70% upside if it went MS65. It looked MS65/66 to me. Cracked it out. It came back Altered Surfaces from NGC. And then tried again at PCGS and same result, altered surfaces. No major gold coin dealer I showed the coin could tell me what was wrong with it. My only way out was to consign to a major auction and hope someone saw what I saw in the first place. The auction house liked the coin and resubmitted it for grading without my knowledge, and not knowing I had tried twice already....and voila.....MS66. 4 different submissions with 3 diff results (64, NG, NG, 66). I would have gladly accepted a 10-20% loss on that coin just to bail out and move on. But, the best offers I received after "telling the complete" story to all potential buyers were 30% losses...or approx MS63 money. The heck with that. Getting a 100% profit was a lot better though.
There's a lesson to be learned here but not sure exactly what. Keep trying until you get the grade you don't deserve? Never give up? Stick with your gut?
I also had a choice mint state 1841 half dollar that I bought raw out of auction with a dealer friend. We figured the coin for a solid 63 and a 64 shot. First time through it went 63. We weren't really ready to give up. Then it came back a variety of grades including a "no grade" for some light pin scratching in a localized place on the reverse....probably where a light spot was removed. It came back graded twice as often as it no graded. We finally gave up after it came back MS63 again (grades of 63, 62, NG,....and finally 63).
Remember... evaluating coins is subjective... there are no objective standards. Yes, there certainly is a great deal of professional skills that are applied, but until true standards are developed, there will always be such issues. Cheers, RickO
I had an ANACS VF25 Details (cleaned) 1876 Type II/II Trade dollar that didn't look all that bad. I cracked it and sent it in to PCGS and it came back VF30. You can see it on one of the major dealer websites right now for $3700+

Wow, that looks good to me too.
I have not been through this since the "body bag" days, but I have had a few coins get a body bag at NGC and a grade from PCGS and vice versa.
The widest story I heard was from a dealer who bought a Proof Morgan dollar thinking that it would upgrade from PR-64. He sent it to one of the services and the coin came back as Proof-like MS-64, which was a huge come down in price. He tried again and got a body bag, which was even worse. On the third try it ended up in a PR-64 holder again.
So after three submissions, with a lot of heartburn in the middle, he ended up in the same place.
that connecticut commem. looks pretty good to me as well.
Thumbed? High points on the bird.
I won't give it away, but what is wrong with this coin would make a great educational poll question thread.
Feel free to give it away, AMRC. Clearly I could use the education - but too busy to manage a thread right now!
I agree... I would like to know as well.... I seem to be missing whatever it is on those TruViews... Cheers, RickO
