Grade Results Just In: Full Set of Mercury Dimes from a Collector's Album!

illini420illini420 Posts: 11,466 ✭✭✭✭✭

In early October at the Buena Park Coin Show, I was offered a complete set of Mercury Dimes at my table. The coins were uncertified and in one of those Eagle albums with the hard plastic 2x2 holders that snap together. It looked like a set that was put together over many years and I immediately I recognized that it was much better than the average raw Merc dime set you usually see floating around. Not only was there a 1916-D in the set, but the 1916-D was really nice and had an older PCGS AU50 tag with it. With the overdates and the Micro S there too, it was the full set of 80 coins. You never know what you'll be offered when setting up at a coin show!

After acquiring the set and looking at them some more, I knew I would need to get several of them PCGS graded. I knew some of the coins were cleaned or had other minor issues that would keep them from grading, but most looked nice to me. And after going back and forth trying to figure out which ones were worth sending in for grading, I eventually decided to send all 80 of them in for certification. Certainly the more expensive route, but it made the decision easier just to send everything and would be more fun too.

Just saw the results posted today and overall I was happy, especially with the 1916-D:

Haven't crunched all of the numbers, but I'm glad I went forward with getting the full set graded. Sure, some of the coins weren't worth the certification fees, but a few of the others that I was thinking were maybe worth $10-$20 max uncertified, did better than I expected too.

    Cool!

All that's left is kicking yourself for the ones you guessed wrong on, and patting yourself on the back for the ones you got right.

The few rare dates paid for the rest apparently. At $18-$20 or so a coin on the economy option, not a bad deal.

Fabulous! Are you going to replace the detail coins and keep the complete set intact?

Nice score for a walk in Mike. I love buying decent complete sets. I wonder if other dealers passed on it or if you were a the first to see it.

Not sure, but probably not very high given the dozen or so details coins that would score very low.

I thought about registering the set in the Registry just for fun though, as it is sort of neat to have a full set and consecutive numbers. But since the 1937-D has PVC residue, that coin will be coming back raw and will not be able to be registered... so it wouldn't really be a full set in the Registry.

I think many coins would be in demand from Everyman collectors. Nice job on the set!!

NIce job. It was nice of them to start with a cert number ending in 01.

    Thanks for responding, Mike
    Re: Registry.
It's neat to read about. You could soak that one in acetone and re submit. On that note, I purchased a complete set of IHCs in a Capital holder from another dealer about a year ago and have been entertaining the thought of doing as you have.

It's a refreshing thread you have, mister.
