Should I sell my 'wheat' cents ?

1630Boston1630Boston Posts: 13,859 ✭✭✭✭✭

I have a local person that will pay the following:

I prefer unsearched because I enjoy going through them. But if they are presorted then I'd pay 2.5 cents for 40s - 50s wheaties and 4 cents for earlier.

Not exactly sure how many I have but they are sorted by decade.
Any input would be appreciated. This is local so no postage involved.
Thanks

If I were you I think I would ask for a little more than that and see what he says. By the time it takes to facilitate the deal, travel to him and back home, and other assorted costs you would have to have a lot of wheat pennies to make it worth your while.

I guess depends also on how many you have. I mean if you have a few 5 gallon buckets full then why not try to get a little more for the teens and 20s if you have large amount like multiple buckets of each decade sure go for it

Teens and 20s can go for quite a bit if they are clean and not many issues.

its a fair price. anyone else you have to ship them and even in a flat rate box its 15 bucks and up depending on how many you ship. Sell em is what I suggest.

    @SamByrd
I think I'm with you, I don't have 5 gallon buckets of each decade but I am trying to 'get rid' of "stuff" that I have accumulated over the past 40+ years. And you are correct in my opinion, postage can eat up a lot.
    Thanks for your input.

I would sell the 40-50s for the 2.5 and the 30s, minus the early d mint dates (31-33) for 4c and hang on to the rest.

The truth be told, you are the only one that can and should make that decision. But remember what ever that decision is, you gotta live with it. At least that's what my dad told me LOL :)

I once had 87 odd rolls of wheats my Dad gave me once. It was a nice mix of 40s-50s being AU or better the earlier dates tend to be pretty slick and beat up. My friend had a buyer for all he had at 4 cents and I jumped on board.

Quickly turned the money into a single gold piece thinking it would have a greater audience if I ever wanted to sell and took less space and weight. My Dad was cool with it too! Never regretted it.

I would quite happily dump the 40s-50s for 2.5c each.

I have a gallon jug or two (yeah..one is loose, the other has rolls..) and even a couple of rolls of '43 steel cents (I have had them for 20 years...they said unopened, but to my eye, they had been). I could not bear to sell them without searching them first. :) Cheers, RickO

I have a couple rolls of steel cents, all of the other wheats I have searched and wouldn't mind selling to consolidate things.
    Especially the 40's and 50's.

I'd probably sell them for that.

2.5 cents seems on the low end, I'd gladly buy some at that.

I put a lot of about 2500 on ebay a couple months ago and was very pleased with the price I got. 2500 easily fits in a small flat rate box.

One of the bulk buyers I would normally sell to has a "No Buy" on 40's and 50's right now. Delivered to their office: 10 cents each for teens, 6 cents each for 20's, and 4.5 cents each on 30's, (G or better, no culls.) Naturally, better dates are figured individually.

What are 1909 and 1909 -s going for in bulk .. G- VF .... ..like their musty , history smell

Then again, I have never sold a coin in 50+ years. If I sell my wheat cents what might happen next ? Sell junk silver ?
Sell all my raw coins ? Sell slabbed coins and get down to a 'box of 1' ?
    IDK........I'll contemplate over turkey.

It's not 'a lot' of money but they do take up a lot of room. And if something [or when] happens to me I can picture them being cashed in at coinstar.

If we are talking about the same thing.....................The posting of those wheaties [and the dialog that went along with it] are a classic moment in time, never to be repeated.

If there's smoething I would never enjoy, it's bulk wheats. Years ago, they would come in deals and you just had to buy them. I would haul the bags to my folks house and throw them in my old bedroom so they wouldn't be in my way. After some time, my dad became concerned they might crash through the ceiling. I had 26 bags up there. I figured I had better move them so I called a dealer friend. He shows up in a Ford Escort. We put bags in the trunk, on the seats, on the floor......That doggone car was sparking as it went up the street. The deal was a pain.......and only worth what one decent coin would be. Since then, I've really disliked that stuff.

To me bulk wheat cents are just "stuff". Why not capitalize them and put the money into a cool coin or save it for something bigger (or a rainy day)?

Ultimately it depends on the type of collector you are, but my advice is to sell the wheats at what was offered. Sell the junk silver. Sell the raw coins and slabbed coins that you don't look at and appreciate. With your new funds, buy coins you will truly appreciate individually. In my view, it doesn't matter how many you end up with as long as you're able to appreciate each specific coin.

If you appreciate the bulk, the above advice won't make sense. In that case, the size of your collection matters more and I'd suggest you sell your better coins and buy more wheats, modern BU rolls, mint sets and the like.

NO...you like them and you like buying them...if you own a Ferrari you don't need the money...personally I'd rather have two $10K gold coins...but that's me not you...stay the course!!!
