Do you base your coin purchases on the denomination?

I do.
And it's wrong, but I still do it.
I'll stretch farther for a draped bust half or dollar than I will for a large cent.....other than a chain.

Guilty....the only thing I will spend big bucks for is a Dime.

For me, I feel better about spending more money for a larger coin than a small one. I guess I just feel like I am getting more for my money that way.

Nothing wrong with it. Collecting is about personal preference.

Similar to size matters, sometimes denomination matters too.

If I buy anything aside from my core series, the price seems to correlate with denomination. (More for a dollar than a quarter, etc)

    pretty much what @jtlee321 said

I buy mostly Walkers but I likely wouldn't purchase any denomination below a Quarter. Except MAYBE a Mercury Dime or a Buffalo Nickel but that's it.

I do like the larger coins.... Morgans, Peace, Walkers.....but Mercs and Buffs also are interesting...also old copper... I guess about the only thing that does not get my attention is quarters...not sure why... Cheers, RickO

don't care about the denomination, as long as it is broken ....

I'm collecting a US type set 1793-1999, so I need all of the denominations. My preference is for medium sized coins such as quarters, half dollars, half eagles, and eagles, but I've naturally had to "stretch" for tiny coins such as the draped bust half dimes.

Why is it "wrong"? Why wouldn't one stretch further for a coin in the denomination that he collects than he would for a denomination that falls outside of his core collection?

Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

As a type collector I buy the coin for what it is. That is not to say that some coins please me more than others. I've never been a Nickel Three Cent Piece fan. I have one nice Proof for my type set, and that's it.

I've known collectors who hate the early half dimes because they are small. I love them. I can't get over how much detail Robert Scott was able to engrave in such a small space. Finding one that is fully struck is a source of wonder for me.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I am having trouble understanding the intent of the OP, so please excuse me if I go off on a tangent. I base my coin purchases on what I am collecting at the time. Right now it is Gold coins, and denominations have very little to do with it since it is mostly type collecting. Last week it was a 1941 Doubled Die Lincoln.
